Mel did an awesome job coaching and organising the Green Fleet at the regatta. It was great to see a new group of MYC sailors coming through. Well done to Sassy Taylor, Digby Taylor, Henri Levenspiel, Lucy Laverty, Heath Jones, Milli Grover, Alfie Lee, Liam Ryan, Ella Bremen, Oscar Lee, Declan Ryan & Will White for all competing in their first state titles. Intermediate Fleet was represented by Jay James, Sassy Taylor, Brooke Hutchison, Digby Taylor. Henri Levenspiel 3rd place Green Fleet Declan Ryan 4th place Green Fleet Jay James 7th place Intermediate Fleet Will McKenzie 2nd Victorian Open Fleet (7th overall) Sophie McKenzie 1st Victorian Girl Open Fleet Well done team MYC!!! Marlay Point Overnight Race
With the 50th anniversary of the Marlay Point Overnight Race being celebrated this year, there were 240 entrants on the start line for the annual race to Paynesville for trailable yachts. A big MYC contingent of 12 boats made the trip. The race was sailed in very light winds and as usual was a test of skill, patience and endurance, with many boats taking over 16 hours to complete the course. Some great results with Pipalini (Mitch Baylis) and Scratch (David Eickmeyer) taking handicap honours in division C and division D respectively. Phil Mannes proved as wily as usual finishing 2nd across the line in division A . Well done to everyone including Endless Advice, Beau Brummell, Himalayan Woman, Mixed Nuts, Messin About, Seaspray, Fake News, Heaven Can Wait and Pippin. Anyone that competes in a Marlay Point knows what a great experience it is. As usual many of us have already said “never again”, but for some reason we keep going back.........Tim O"Grady Well what a night last Saturday was, The White Party Beatles theme was a huge success and the feedback throughout the night and subsequently has been so overwhelmingly positive.
A massive thank you to the social Committee, Bev, Sophie and Sheryl along with others that helped in making the evening the success it was. Also a big thank you to Rob, Frank, Kirstine, Sarah and the team from the Rocks, the food was amazing. Click here to view the photos from the night taken by the lovely Sonja :) The Special Sailing Instructions for the Queenscliff Destination Race have now been released. They can be found under the Sailing heading on the website (Special Sailing Instructions sub-heading) or, you can twitch your index finger and get to them here. The Board of the Foundation is pleased to provide an update on its activities since we last reported to you in our 2017 Annual report. In that report we outlined the three programs that had been identified as the initial focus of the Foundation's activities: -the purchase of 6 Pacer dinghies for use in junior sail training and in School team racing activities -to assist members with financial assistance to compete in major Championship events -to assist in the Club's established Sailability programs providing sailing experiences for disabled athletes. On Friday 16 February you will be aware that the 6 Pacer dinghies were christened and sailed for the first time, opening a new and exciting era of junior sail training at the Club. In addition the Club's training manager will be engaging with local schools to establish a team racing program which is expected will attract more members over time into the Club. The Pacers cost $48,909 and were paid for entirely out of your Foundation funds. In November 2017 the Foundation provided $2,000 towards the cost of three crews competing in the 420 Australian Championships and the World Titles held in Perth. All of the crews were members of the Victorian Sailing Team and had trained for months in preparation for the Titles. The recipients of the award were: Matilda and Lily Richardson Sophie Jackson and Laura Harding Chloe Harper and Lucy Gray. The National Championships attracted a high calibre fleet of 95 boats and our crews acquitted themselves very well. The results were: Sophie and Laura 21st (3rd Australian girls) Lily and Matilda 57th (1st Australian Under 17 girls). Chloe and Lucy 73rd (10th Australian girls) Unfortunately Matilda Richardson suffered a severe shoulder injury in pre Regatta training and Laura Harding injured her knee in the first heat of the World Titles following the Nationals. These injuries impacted two of our crews and hampered their ability to compete at their best. The Richardsons were only able to compete in two heats of the Worlds due to this injury, but our girls capped off the Regatta when Lily Richardson teamed up with Sophie Jackson in the last heat winning in the Ladies fleet. Sophie and Laura came 6th overall in the Ladies fleet. Following the Regattas in Perth Matilda and Lily Richardson travelled to Brisbane to compete in the Australian Youth Championships. Despite the continuing problems with Matilda's shoulder, which forced them to retire in the second heat, the girls were successful in being selected in the Australian Youth Sailing Team after winning the Under 17 girls 420 Title. As a result of this victory the girls have a busy schedule of events coming up. They will be representing Australia in a regatta in Japan in May as members of the Australian Youth Sailing Team, followed by the World Youth Championships in Corpus Christy USA in July and hopefully the 420 Under 17 world Championships in Newport Rhode Island in August 2018. I am sure that all members will join with us in wishing the girls well as they continue to represent our Club and Australia with distinction.
In respect of Sailability the Foundation has recently contributed $1,368 towards the cost of replacement sails for two Access dinghies in our Sailability fleet. Following these initiatives the Foundation has funds of $11,779 at the end of January. We see the Foundation as a continuing means of assisting sailing at Mornington in so many ways and encourage you all to continue contributing what you can to assist us in achieving our goals. The Club is experiencing high demand for keel boat training and would like to purchase a suitable boat to meet this need. In addition we would like to continue, and expand, financial assistance to our leading sailors as they attend major regattas. If you have an interest in other initiatives we would be pleased to hear from you. Donations can be made through the Australian Sports Foundation to the Mornington Yacht Club Foundation and are tax deductable. Alternatively they can be made directly to the Club through contacting the office. Stuart Gooley Chairman MYC Office Hours - Labour Day Weekend Friday - 8.30am to 3.30pm Saturday CLOSED Sunday CLOSED Monday CLOSED Tuesday - 8.30am to 3.30pm “Every human being has a basic instinct to help each other out. This instinct is found in every culture without exception.” Andy Weir
It was the crew of Phoenix’s turn on Saturday to act instinctively: Peter Green, Bill Bennet, Craig, Scotty and David A small fishing boat with 2 young men on board capsized and were in the water for at least 30 minutes with just about no hope when the crew of Phoenix spotted a hand waving. The fisherman was to say later that he was about to give up. 2 lives saved. Well done!! The reaction from the crew priceless: “ When you see someone in need, instinctively you go and help out and it was our privilege to be there at the right time.” The Soiree The big bi annual social night - The White Party with a Beatles theme was a fantastic event and well attended by over 160 people and well delivered by our events team consisting of Social committee members and others , Bev, Sophie, Sheryl and all the rest well done. The Rocks delivered yet again, well done. Sailing • Girls sail on the Friday at DBYC. Well done to all the MYC members that competed. Lilly and Matilda First, great Job. • Good luck to all those doing State Titles, Marley Point Regatta etc over the long weekend. We also have over 15 Optis doing the States at Blairgowrie including 10 green fleeters, 8 Trailables ( approx.) doing Marley Point, 5 420s at SSCBC. • Great to see the good numbers out on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Chris Jackson Commodore We are really getting our stuff together guys!
There must have been at least 20 kids in boats or on the beach enjoying the evening. Together with heaps of parents, snags and great conversations I think we have all created something special. Introducing music on the beach this session was a great idea; let’s keep it on the checklist for each session...at the rate we are going I reckon it won’t be long before we install a disco ball in the opti shed! Will White officially named his boat Megabyte! Great job Sophie getting that done. On the water we had Greg Sharman, Henry Heron, Sophie Jackson and of course Ella. They had a few boats to muster but as always had the kids engaged...you make it look so easy. A special mention to Jay Polson who is definitely getting the “Boom-ed” award this year. A fat lip all weekend isn’t enough to stop this kid; I hear Jay is keen to keep sailing…good on you Jay, we look forward to seeing you next week. Great to see Samuel Ede back and Abby & Sarah Young check out the fun. Thanks Mel for coming along for a chat. REMINDER: There is no session this coming Friday (9 March) due to the Optimist State Championship over the long weekend. For all those that have entered…Have FUN!!! Next Friday Fun/Ella’s Fun Coaching will be 16 March; I will send out some details closer to the date. Cheers, Bret http://mornington.harcourts.com.au/Property/736647/VMG27472/9-47-Green-Island-Ave

Contact Mike for more information <[email protected]> Hi All
Conditions were tough getting out but the wind and waves only added to the excitement for this bunch of Friday Funners! A big thankyou to Sophie Jackson and Nick Sharman who were great help with launching; I watched from the jetty and it was very enjoyable to see how their experience turned what seemed a hard mission into a new skill. Always great to see some new faces. Trust you had fun Oscar and Digby Crittenden and hope to see you next week. It was an amazing effort by Alfie who took Digby out for a ride. Watching him push his boat through the waves while keeping his first crew safe was inspiring. How you got through those waves I have no idea? Digby had a great time by the look on his face. Millie and Henri also came back with big grins after Hunter and Tom took them for a spin on a Feva; thanks Hunter and Tom, we always look forward to seeing you out there on the Feva. Liam, Ella, Declan and Will are getting more familiar with their boats by the great sailing they demonstrated. It is wonderful to see you taking care of them and washing them down after sailing. A few of the kids thought the boogie board was the way to go and took advantage of the surf. Seems we had the harbour covered with activities. Andrew once again a great job on the BBQ however there appears some competition from Jack Vermeer. Looking Forward Looking at Ella’s Fun Coaching there are only 3 Sessions remaining and the last (23 March) coincides with the Junior Party! Book online www.trybooking.com/357286 I am hoping many of us get a chance to be part of the remaining sessions and we have big turnouts. The group has grown over summer and have all been fantastic at welcoming new families; something we want to continue. For those new to the group or encouraging friends to join in here is a quick link to booking a session. The webpage also explains a little bit more of what we are about. www.morningtonyc.net.au/ellas-fun-coaching.html Cheers Bret |
