Irwin Vale (pictured below)  will be our guest speaker on Friday the 5th of May at 6.30pm and our aim is for members to sign up for the run, fundraiser and raise awareness of this charity.

The presentation will be about 15-20 minutes only and we would like to see as many as possible of you to attend please to support our fellow MYC Member.

Wings for Life is an international not-for-profit spinal cord research foundation. Their mission is to find a cure for spinal cord injury. They fund world-class scientific research and clinical trials around the globe aimed at healing the injured spinal cord. The driving forces behind Wings for Life are the two-time motocross world champion Heinz Kinigadner and the founder of Red Bull, Dietrich Mateschitz. In 2003, Kinigadner's son Hannes had a tragic accident which left him tetraplegic. The Wings for Life World Run is the centrepiece of its fundraising efforts, and 100% of the entry fee (now $71.50) goes to life-changing research projects aimed at healing the injured spinal cord. All administrative costs of the event and foundation are kindly covered by the Red Bull company.
 
The Wings for Life World Run is a global race with a difference. Instead of a finish line, runners and wheelchair competitors – from beginners to elite athletes – race side by side to keep ahead of the Catcher Car. On May 7, 2017, over 100,000 participants in 25 locations worldwide will start the Wings for Life World Run at precisely the same time - whether that’s dawn in North America, the middle of the day in Europe, or at night here in Australia. The Melbourne start time is 21:00 making for an exciting night running experience! The Catcher Cars take off 30 minutes after the start at 15km/h and steadily increase their speed, precisely synced across the globe, until the last participants have been caught.
 
As someone who sustained a spinal cord injury in 2008 when a car hit me while I was working in Fiji, Wings for Life greatly inspires me. It is an organisation with no other agenda; the ultimate aim is to find a genuine cure for spinal cord injury and Wings for Life through the World Run have tapped into the amazing power of social engagement, in order to make this discovery possible. To see thousands of strangers across the globe compete in a race that is some-what symbolic of the sort of journey ones goes on with spinal cord injury, is amazingly inspiring and heart-warming. It obviously gives me renewed hope of a genuine cure being discovered, but it also re-energises my own  efforts in pushing myself beyond "boundaries". I can't wait to take part!
  
The main objective for me is to raise awareness and persuade people to sign up for the Run. But certainly any donations would be gladly accepted and I can ensure it is processed through the webpage (http://www.wingsforlifeworldrun.com/au/en/melbourne/) as coming from the Mornington Yacht Club.

Many of you are aware that the Club Championship races of the 1st of April were postponed.

We are going to run these races in conjunction with the aggregate and class race series next Saturday the 29th of April.  The start time will be as published in the callander (2pm on water) & we will endeavour to get 3 races in.

Here's hoping we get a good turn out for the last of the season!

Enjoy the sophisticated sounds of live vocalist Kate Johnston & Adrian Scott duo.
Kate, a songstress for many years with a wide range of experiences from jazz, blues roots/rock and soul bands, wedding/corporate entertainment, piano bar and musical theatre.
Kate has been described as "beautifully talented with a powerful voice. She lights up any room and has a voice that makes the blind smile".
Adrian has performed or recorded as one of the founding members of Australia’s iconic bands  Air Supply (arranging their early albums) He’s worked with  Jon English, Dragon (piano and string arrangements for O Zambezi album), Mark Williams, Thelma Houston, Brian Cadd, Glenn Shorrock, Tommy Emmanuel, Debbie Byrne, Dannii Minogue, Bob Downe and John Farnham.
He has toured the world with Kylie Minogue, as her keyboard player and musical director; and, more recently with The Little River Band.
Together Kate and Adrian are bound to create a Fantastic night for the Mornington Yacht Club End of Season Party we look forward to seeing you there!

A couple of weekends ago the racing was shortened under the Rules due to the storm approaching and there was at a bit of confusion amongst competitors regarding how to Finish on the day.

Here's a short document prepared by a member of the Race Committee that will explain how it needs to be done - anywhere on the racing circuit - and, how this particular race day played out with the Shorten course in place.

Pictured below is Beth Bennett OAM sailing at Mornington Yacht Club today with Sailability and loving it. Beth currently resides at Peninsula Grange. 

​Elizabeth (Beth) Bennett was born in Hobart. Beth and her late husband, Harry, moved from Geeveston, where they had an orchard, to Orford in 1974. Since moving to the East Coast she has shown a strong commitment to the needs of the residents of the Glamorgan-Spring Bay Municipality.

Her long association with the Girl Guides saw her progress from a Leader in Geeveston, through to a District Commissioner at Spring Bay and finally, a member of the Guides Tasmania Council. She has continued to work with young people as a mentor, and has been able to motivate others in the community to become mentors as well.
Beth has a strong social conscience and is committed to justice and fairness for all Tasmanians. She was a municipal councillor for Spring Bay from 1980-90. Many people in the Orford-Triabunna community continue to go to Beth for help because they know she can effectively represent their issues through the committees and networks of which she is a part.
As part of her commitment to the wellbeing of the older people of the Glamorgan-Spring Bay municipality, Beth has been involved with a number of boards and committees. Beth is the Vice Chair of the Prosser House Board of Management, and held the position of Chair from 1995-2003. She has also been the Chairwoman of the War Widows Guild, East Coast Sub-branch, since 1984.
Beth’s other involvements include being a member of the Positive Ageing Consultative Committee, member of the Glamorgan-Spring Bay Municipal Health Advisory Committee and the Orford Hall Committee. She is also a Justice of the Peace.
An innovative organiser, Beth has been responsible for coordinating the Seniors Week concert at Orford for several years. The 2006 concert featured 12 items, which included everything from a strip-tease to tango, all performed by older members of the community.
Beth is very aware of the effects of social isolation and is particularly concerned for those who live in outlying rural areas. Her commitment to her community has been recognised by her being named the Spring Bay Municipality Citizen of the Year in 1990.

Just to let you know that there will be not be a guest speaker at the next ladies lunch which is being held on Friday the 5th of May.

Please still come down to the club at 12 noon for lunch to catch up with friends!
