Nigel Jones and Cam McKenzies J111, Ginan has taken Line Honours and won AMS, ORC and PHS divisions of the 3rd and final West Offshore Product Coastal Sprint race of the season in fickle light winds.
With a shortened course the fleet started outside Port Phillip Heads in light winds of 5 – 8 knots. McKenzie commented after the race “The race was a little shorter than we’d planned. Nigel did a great start and during that first leg with the code zero flying we managed 8 – 9 knot boad speed, and stretched our lead.” McKenzie went onto to say “The upwind section was hard as the winds shifted and became fickle and this where our experienced crew really helped spotting the wind shifts.” “We like the format of the Coastal Sprints and are looking forward to the 70th anniversary race to Apollo Bay which will close off the ORCV Coastal Championship.” finished McKenzie. “Decisions made can sometimes be good management or a gamble but today they paid off.” Nigel Rose skipper of Algy Rose a Swarbrick S111 went onto to explain “as we rounded the gate off Rye back beach, Ginan had headed more south and most of the fleet took a SW path towards the next mark. We could see that this direction wasn’t going to work for us especially if the winds swung more westerly as predicated.” Nigel went on “So we went alone on a different tack and our gamble today paid off. As the winds did change and provided that extra lift to allow us to make up ground and pass two more boats by the finish.” said Rose. “Whilst there was some effort to get to the start line, we did enjoy the race and now have two more crew members with ocean racing experience.” Rose commented, “It’s been quite a journey getting back into the category 3 racing after some time off, but I’m there now and we are looking forward to competing in the 70th Apollo Bay race.” Entries for the 70th anniversary Melbourne Apollo Bay race are open here https://www.orcv.org.au/apollo-bay-about-the-race Top 3 race results AMS

Just saying this one - Victorian School Team Sailing States was Jackos lead and Ben’s hard work. 18 Pacers, 24 teams, over 170 kids, almost 200 races, hundreds more hamburgers and thousand more smiles. And we still fitted in Sailability, big boat aggregate race Saturday, and Learn to Sail on the beach Sunday morning, and then there was a huge Thursday night. Your club has been busy. Said it before, but the team is an amazing team that perform their roles to such professional standards. Well done to Brighton winning today but such great results for heaps of young MYC sailors representing Peninsula, Woodleigh, Toorak and Haileybury. So many comments on how the visitors just love visiting Mornington. Big summer with 3 big regattas and the extras like Scout weekend and Ukrainian day. We should be proud of what a positive contribution we make to the community.
The past week has been terrific around the Club. The Sailability function last Wednesday supported by the Rocks demonstrated our sincere appreciation for the contribution our volunteers make enabling disabled people to sail as well as the financial contribution Sailability provides with help funding the new lift and downstairs Club renovations. Congratulations to Krista Bailey being awarded the Sailability Volunteer of the year. The Ronstan Band kept us entertained for the final twilight sail of the year and once again several people commented on the tasty meal options put on by the Rocks. The Schools competition over three days of the weekend provided the large number of competitors and their supporters with a superb demonstration of the professional and friendly atmosphere our Club hosts significant sailing events from our attractive vantage point on the Bay. Teams racing is a unique regatta format, using two up Pacer boats, where two teams of three boats compete with each other to score the least points in a race. High levels of skill in teamwork, tactics and strategy are required to ensure minimum points in a race, as first out of six does not always gain the minimum points. Blocking, luffing and traps are common tactics deployed to support your team against the opposition. MYC members were represented amongst a number of the schools competing and acquitted themselves very well. The work put in by all our volunteers in preparing, running and quickly tidying up from such a major event was fantastic. Well done. This week we will be laying new rails in preparation for slipping. The dredge is making good progress as it inches it’s way towards our slipway and ramp. Also this week the Future Development Subcommittee will be holding its first consultation meeting with Parks Victoria concerning the replacement of Fishermans Jetty. Best of luck to our golfers on Thursday retaining the Victory Cup. Blairgowrie, Sandringham and Royal Melbourne have assembled some stiff competition.
