New years Eve  Harcourt's Twilight Series Race #2

31/12/2015

HAPPY 2016 to ALL BOATIES and YACHTIES
Picture
A sweltering 39 degrees Celsius and no wind all day but yet again  Steve Bardsley arrives at the club, climbs to the tower and arranges a 15 knot easterly for 5.45pm. I think the Open Bic Worlds at Safety Beach need a Steve. 11 boats entered 8 started and 6 got results. Another large no. of boats stayed on the deck to start the NYE celebrations and waiting for the Nude Fireworks on Sunny side Beach. The deckies were also entertained with Lazy on Morning Light cruising up and down the harbour.

We had a new sailing visitor Neil (Emanuel)  and Mary from Glen Waverley.  Neil wants to return to sailing after previously being a European Finn Champion.  Put you bids in as he wants to sail at Mornington, he is big and fit and  knows his stuff. Neil helmed "Times r Tuff" as a double hander and I watched him dip the line to beat solo sailor Kerry "Jessica" Knowles, "Take One".  A great effort by Kerry!

The 15 knot easterly did not cool things down, Trevor Neate and the "Jesse" crew pirated Jim Watson's Windsong so they could be on a winning boat for the last race of 2015. We hope Jim Watsons crew  were not overcome by Pirate Graeme Pimlott's  fashion statement  and it does not catch on.  See the pics and a warning please do not enlarge as you could be ill.

The lone Etchell "Vendetta", James Bacon was having his first race for the season and as a double hander sailed really well to come second. 3rd was our MYC consistent performer and top sailor "Anna",  Peter Delange.  Click here for the full results of Race 2. After 2 Races "Sundara" Stormy is in first place.  Click here for the series result

Hi All,
I can't believe how quickly we have reached Christmas -  It just seems like last weekend that our season opened!  I hope you all have been enjoying what M.Y.C. offer both on and off the water.
For the first season in many I can't seem to put a Saturday together, but have very much enjoyed the few Thursdays that I and my girls have dragged Smile 'n Wave out of the yard to enjoy what we all love...Sailing.
It was terrific to see so many new faces on the deck last Thursday, to be able to sail into the landing with the Ronstan band playing with the deck buzzing is truly a Mornington experience.
It seems our fleet numbers have been ok, but I know they will ramp up even more after Christmas.
Good luck to all competing both in Ocean Races or National Championships over this Christmas period.
I have unfortunately had to devote considerable time to both business and family over the last few weeks, I hope that my absence was noted.
I have really appreciated the efforts made by my fellow Committee members and our hard working office staff in keeping our great club trimmed and sailing on the right tack.
I am heading down to the Mornington East Y.C. with my family for a couple of weeks and am looking forward to the 2nd half of our season, especially the 70th season celebrations.  The amount of work being put into this is amazing and I know you will all enjoy both the open weekend and the Soiree.  I know I will. To get the discounted ticket price of $99 for the soiree which includes entertainment, food and alcohol for the evening don't forget to book by the 30th of December.

I would like to wish you all a great Christmas & a Safe New Year,

Go Team MYC competing over the Christmas & New Year break!!!                             Graeme Alexander

The December Heatwave came with really strong northerly winds. The winds were so strong at the northern end of the bay with SYC cancelling races but it was good news that MYC went ahead for the Laser and Open Opti Fleet. It was all weird as the racing was in a south easterly wind direction and no more than 10 knots. Waves were coming from all directions.

2 races were held. Races 5 and 6 of the Club Championship ,11 Opti's competing and Denver James in his Laser 4.7. Thankyou  Reece James and his team for running some great racing in tricky conditions.

Apple phones  stop working at 35 degrees Celsius but this did not stop a fleet of 39 boats racing and facing the elements. All day the wind averaged 0 knots but at 6pm Steve Bardsley ordered 10 knots from  the south east, right on time for ideal racing. Time synchronizing upon sign on must have been a heat stress factor as 4 boats were OCS (On Course Start). One of which being first time entrant "Licence to Chill" Jeff and Sheila Young. Welcome Jeff to your Secret Service Mornington initiation. Scratched or "dsq" was "Scratch" David Eickmeyer for a technicality only those on the inside know why.

The race was a real chaser with a fast course, flat water,  a long starboard beat and a Kangaroo Santa hopping from boat to boat with treats. Those not distracted and crossing the finish line the quickest were:-.

1st Sundara - Jon and Annie Storm (1 hr 18min 58 Sec)
2nd Tub Thumper - G . Heard and A. Creed
3rd. Sanjuro - Keith Ross
4th Messin About - Paul Copeland

I expect First Light - Andrew Weber to be the winner of the most decorated boat and crew that got into the Christmas atmosphere  but  still waiting for confirmation from the fishing charter boat pics to give the hawk eye verdict . Great work First Light

The Deck after the race was buzzing. Commodore Graeme Alexander said "it does not get any better" whilst he enjoyed craning his Etchell with a XXXX Gold, Live Music and his crew swimming. Vice Commodore Sheryl Schumacher was as equally excited with her new Mooring and the live music.

MYC will claim The Ronstan Band as their own with Tim and Tony Melville making up half the band. There was no doubt they are officially the best ever Live Deck band in the World. It was half expected Morn Pen resident James Reyne to join them when singing "Reckless".  Most stayed  and danced to the music way after sailing on such a brilliant balmy evening.

Thank You Harcourts Real Estate for Sponsoring Series #2.
Thank You Steve Bardsley, Sue Redman and Barb Nash running a wonderful race
Thank You Sean Miles and Michael our Frosty and Christmas Drivers
Thank You Especially to Greta Karay - Our secret Santa  and Kangaroo. Greta designed and made the Kangaroo suit as part of her RMIT studies and I would vote this the best and coolest Kangaroo  suit ever made Greta was absolutely fantastic playing the role and I think all will agree made the race and night really special.
It was a truly great finish to 2015 Twilight Sailing.

Mornington Pier Forecourt - Remaining Works

9/12/2015

Picture
Dear All,
Please see attached plans and explanation beneath regarding remaining works at Mornington Pier Forecourt.
Unfortunately Parks Victoria have not been able to complete the power relocation works, so the project will not be completely finished before Christmas.  This delay was a concern from the outset, hence the staging plan which was sent to you all on the 16th September.
The staging plan means that the forecourt/ carpark area will be left clean, safe and usable for the Christmas and January period, with no construction works planned.  The Contractor will then return in February or when Parks Victoria has relocated the electrical services and complete the remaining tasks.
If you require any further information please let me know.
Kind regards,
James

The launch of a new Children's Sailing Book based on Mornington and Port Phillip Bay.

8/12/2015

Picture
MYC member Deborah Butler has written a  a children’s book "Zubbadoo and the boat with no name"

Debbie wrote "The book is designed to introduce kids to sailing and, therefore, uses sailing terms. There will be a glossary of the terms in the front so non-sailing parents could explain it to kids as the story goes. It is based on the sailor’s legend that it is unlucky to rename a boat. A boat washes up on the shore without a name and the lead character has to help it find its name. It is written in rhyme to replicate the waves of the ocean – not sure if this comes through – but ok, I just love a rhyme. It is set in Mornington and across Port Phillip Bay.  The Mornington Yacht Club stingray makes a feature and needs a name as does the lead character who is a girl."

Deborah has asked the yacht club junior members that love to draw to enter a drawing competition to design the characters of the girl Zubbadoo, the boat with no name and the Sting Ray. We ask that you use your imagination as to what the characters might look like Draw just one or all of the three characters.  Entries close at the end of the school holidays 31 Jan 2016 and are to be received either by email to sarah@morningtonyc.net.au or delivered to the MYC office. see poster below

The winning entries will each win a $50 Sport Phillip Marine Voucher and the winning drawings will be used as the inspiration for the real illustrations of the characters in the book.

The aim is to publish the book early next year and we would like an indication as to how many to publish and ask that you pre-order based on indicative cost of $20 per book. Please send your pre order requirements to email: sarah@morningtonyc.net.au.

It will be a wonderful childrens book  that you will keep you close to home roots and to be read from generation to generation.
