TAG End of Financial Year Report 2020

This last year saw a lot of challenges addressed by this great group of members.  During the year we had our areas of "expertise" outlined, some of these are as follows:

The trades our team have mastered and are now qualified with the MYC uni....
  • "Painter" (non expert) both on and off water, marine grade!
  • "Auto elec" - with a sub diploma in antique agricultural problem solving!
  • "Mechanical equipment trouble shooting and operation"!
  • "Traffic / Yard management" - diploma (2 year course)!
  • "Garbologist" - grade 1 inc. bin division (this qualification has the highest rating from the VERY top of our organisation (above even the Uni director)!
  • "Carpentry" / fit & fix, also with a sub diploma in exec. decision making!
  • "Engineering" - Steel equip fabrication, design, maintenance & repair, incorporating on water marks etc.!
  • "Marine Safety Inspection" diploma. viz Rib's Dominators, Retriever!
  • "MYC Boat / Tractor Operator" qualification - gold class. (inc Crane operator gold class!)
  • "Technology/ Computer Specialist" (very specialised course, very few qualified!)
  • "MYC University, crowd control lollipop degree" (also grade 1 as it involves crowd control of members wishing to shake hands with these extraordinary humble TAG Team Members while just doing their job!)
Social Sub Committee - we must thank our "other half" ladies etc. for their support in keeping the health and strength of all in tip top condition (which is no mean feast!) plus our own catering staff for the week in week out setting a 5 star restaurant quality coffee break with all the trimmings! (I might add that both these qualifications have had years of study attached!) & we are in the process of lobbying MYC Uni to make this also a diploma with it's required renumeration schedule in place!
During the last few weeks a valued member has created another course for the uni of MYC to consider in their program:
  • "Scientific Director of Organisational Tidyness" first class (degree) implementing both creation design and implementation.  As the creator, and the fact that MYC Uni might make it a 3 year course, this person may have to carry this position for a while!

Frivolty aside I think I can speak for all TAG members in "us" thanking all of "us" for the friendship / fun / help and comraderie freely given and accepted.
Not to forget to mention the support given to us by our club.
Stay well and healthy.
Looking forward to more of the same in the future,
LOZ,
Your MYC Club Captain!

I was very excited about writing a “welcome back” letter last week, but unfortunately it was not to be. With the new restrictions announced this week we are almost back to where we were two weeks ago.

However the club rooms are now open & we can now go down for a quiet drink, without the need of a sit down meal. There are maximum number limits for each area on every door.  Please respect them. We live in a “fishbowl” at the Club, we are always “on show”.

I miss seeing your faces and enjoying the unique camaraderie our club has to offer,

However, behind the scenes your Board and Sub Committees have been working extremely hard on planning for next season.  Things have been happening.

The Finance Committee, with the backing of the Board have managed to re-negotiate the Clubs’ finances with the CBA.  We are grateful for their combined expertise.

The Sailing Committee have nearly finalised our calendar for 2020-2021.  Some interesting changes, “watch this space”.

Special thanks to Sarah and Tayla, their support to the Board during these unusual times has been fantastic.

Our new membership fees have been sent out and I am pleased with the response.

Laurie and the Thursday team are keeping the yard in shape and working on their winter projects.  Lick of paint here some new shelves there and the big one…. A refurbished yard trailer for Retriever.

On the water our OTB sailors have been training regularly, keeping their skills and fitness up. We have a group of sailors heading to the NSW 420’s. We wish them luck.

By now you will have seen the news on the introduction of our new Junior and Youth Sailing Program. The Training and Development Committee have researched a new program that compliments the traditional “Tackers” program. Developed in Western Australia with an emphasis on keeping kids and their families in the sport.  It is an exciting development and I am pleased to say the board supported the idea unanimously.

Unfortunately, too many parents saw the “Tackers” program as a baby-sitting service and the kids did not progress past the Tackers courses. Our new program is aimed at addressing this introducing new families into our Club.  Like all things new there is a slight catch. We need some more Plastic (Rainbow) Opti’s to make this new program run efficiently. The Club Foundation has launched an appeal to raise the money. You can join me in donating to help get this off the ground. It is tax deductable through the Australian Sports Foundation.

Get in before the end of the financial year, I urge all members to get behind this program, getting new kids into our sport is the future.

Congratulations to Sophie Jackson and the T & D team for driving this.

Let’s hope we are not too far from normal, whatever normal will be.

INTRODUCTION OF A NEW JUNIOR AND YOUTH SAILING PROGRAM
For a number of years the Club has been introducing children to sailing using the Tackers program developed by Australian Sailing. However, in recent seasons we have seen a drop off in participation and a lack of follow through of juniors into Club activities after they have completed Tackers.  There has also been the lack of parental involvement in the training, with most families dropping their children off and then returning at the end of the lesson.

Our Training and Development team have identified a new program which is aimed at addressing the problems in the Tackers courses and revitalising junior training. The Board has endorsed this initiative recognising that our junior sailors are vital for the maintenance and growth of membership numbers.

The new junior and youth sailing program is known as SLM (Structured Learning Methodology) and originates in Perth where it has been very successful.  Our T&D team have consulted the founder of the program in Perth and have studied its successful introduction into a number of Clubs, including McCrae where it was introduced last summer.

This program will encourage active learning for young sailors to develop confidence and competence as they develop into resilient and independent youth on a lifelong journey of Family Friendship & Sailing.

The main features of the program are:
  • By promotion to local schools we will take 10 children (aged 8-10) each month in the sailing season and provide them with 4 weeks of free sailing tuition.
  • Parents are advised that there is an expectation that if the junior enjoys the program and wishes to advance to the next level they will need to join the Club.  There is also an expectation that once they have reached Level 3 of the program they will need to purchase their own boat.  Experience from other clubs is that around 40-50% of juniors join.
  • Families are encouraged to be involved and support their child’s sailing journey, and during this process the parents will also be encouraged to participate in Club activities; perhaps by sailing on a Thursday night.
  • The program takes a holistic approach to developing young sailors, following a 6-step pathway that teaches more than just skills and techniques.

To conduct this program efficiently we need to increase our fleet of plastic Opti’s by acquiring an additional six boats.

We would appreciate any assistance that you can offer to help us implement the program that the T&D group plans to introduce.  Contributions of any amount would be greatly appreciated and naming rights are available for those who donate an amount of $1,500 as an individual or through their business.

Donations can be made directly to the Club or through the Mornington Yacht Club Foundation where you will receive a tax deduction for the amount donated.  The link to the Yacht Club Foundation at the Australian Sports Foundation is https://asf.org.au/donate/mornington-yacht-club/mycs-opti-purchase-appeal/.
If you wish to claim a tax deduction in the current tax year EFT’s need to be processed by June 26 although credit cards will be accepted until June 30.

Thank you for your support, it is very much appreciated,
Stuart Gooley

Masterclasses in Navigation by the Pros

The ORCV is providing you with a rare opportunity to learn from the world-renowned navigator, Will Oxley and respected Melbourne Double handed sailor, Rod Smallman with three new online Navigation courses. Whilst most yachts have some form of navigation software, these courses aim to ensure you lift your knowledge to make a massive difference when you’re racing.

The courses will use technology (as well as understanding the basics of paper charts) to advance skills. A level of competency in a boat’s technology in Navionics or Expedition (in the Masterclass) is required to gain the most from these sessions. We teach how to best find the information using the technology, how to interpret it and maximise the value of what it’s telling you.

Delivered in person over multiple session, there’s time for you to absorb, complete the tasks to really excel.  More courses just released but selling fast.  This is the last opportunity for 2020 to upskill in navigation.

Limited places exist, learn more and book here https://www.orcv.org.au/news2/5148-orcv-offers-master-classes
