Saturday (Non) Racing Update October 19th 2019

23/10/2019

Okay I know what your thinking at this point. What is there to write about ! There was no sailing on Saturday.  Strong winds, thunder and hail put a stop to that, but on days like these there is often more strategy on the club deck than we see out on the water sailing.

  1. It takes 2 boats to race, so who ever signs up first, is not the spoiler, that title belongs to the skipper that signs on second, forcing the rest of the fleet to fall into line.
  2. Standing close to the sign on sheet and looking vaguely intimidating to discourage skippers from signing on is a useful strategy. If all else fails hiding the pens and sign on sheets is a good back up plan.
  3. Fashion can also be a subtle “tell” with regard to who is really serious about sailing. It was noted by the race officer that one crew were not all that serious as they were wearing their “shopping coat” rather than their “sailing coat”

Thankfully the club house ambience was more encouraging, and all crews retired to the bar rather than the race course, to talk about how daring we all were in days past.

Final results
  1. Tim Dixon (for actually signing on).
  2. Lisa O’Grady (for wearing a shopping coat).
  3. Everyone else that  turned up on the pretense they were going sailing and had no intention.

Mentoring or building skills.  Two options provided by the ORCV
Whether it’s cruising or racing, the first 2 races of the ORCV season are short,  category 3 and are aimed at those that wish to try the ocean.  Being classified as a race, means participants have the ORCV overseeing their passage with strict safety protocols in place.

Picture
The Latitude Series (category 3), incorporating both the Latitude Ocean Race and Pursuit Race will be held on the weekend of the 23rd & 24th of November. This race is specifically designed to help those new to ocean sailing while assisting those already established sailors with crew development within an ocean racing team. This series present both tactical and navigational challenges while also giving the crew the opportunity to build confidence transiting the heads and building ocean miles before the Devonport and Hobart races in December or setting their sights on cruising venturing elsewhere.   Entry is open now https://www.orcv.org.au/about-the-latitude-series

Coastal Sprint – Western Port and return (category 3)
A short 50nm race commences off
Queenscliff on Saturday 23rd at 4 am where you travel to Western Port before turning and finishing off Portsea back beach.  This race is designed to test your skills on a slightly longer coastal passage but still, have you home by Saturday evening.  It’s a new race to the ORCV calendar.  Entries via https://www.orcv.org.au/sailing/races/coastal-sprint-series

Over the weekend Sail Sandy was held at Sandringham Yacht Club. There were many sailors participating in the event from TeamMYC in many different classes. Many of these sailors finished the regatta with great results.

In the 29ers we had Zac Heyes finish 2nd overall and Lily & Matilda come in at a close 4th place.
James Jackson & Lachie Caldwell won in the 420s, with Kate & Brooke being the second placed Mornington boat in 5th place.
In the Laser fleet we had Daniel Laverty coming in 4th in the 4.7, and had Jack and Lachie placing well in a very experienced Radial fleet.
The new Aero fleet saw Rhett Gowans take home the win, with Sophie Jackson first female and 4th Aero.
We also had Leigh and Chloe sailing in the Optimist, and Will & Harrison and Sophie & Claudia sailing in the 420s.
Well done to everyone, and a great start to the sailing season.

Saturday Racing Update October 12th 2019

Simple things like getting to the start line often seem easy, but things don’t always work that way. A tricky easterly wind  and a damaged outboard sadly ended Beau Brummell’s race day before they left the dock and Obsessions uncooperative mainsail made for a quick dash to the start line.

A fleet of 12 boats in divisions 1,2 &3 got under way in a perfect easterly flow under sunny skies. It was great to see code flag Romeo back to its normal size. Course 15 was set, and I suspect had all crews searching for the course sheet. Who knew there was a course 15, let alone where we would be heading!

A short beat to the start line sorted out the order with Obsession leading the fleet around the top mark. It was close finish in Division 1 with a 12 second margin over the line between Obsession and Morticia and close also in Division 3 with Dark Side of the Moon heading Mixed Nuts across the line. A shifty and variable wind made for interesting racing on the day, but with such beautiful weather sailing has to be the real winner.

Final Results:

Line Honors
Division. 1. Obsession
Division. 2. YT2
Division. 3  Dark Side of the Moon

Handicap Results:

Division. 1
  1. Morticia : McDonald, Kurz & Alexander
  2. Obsession : Laurie & Michael White
  3. Windsong : Jim Watson

Division 2
  1. YT2 : Stuart Gooley
  2. Arrabelle : B. Levenspiel & G. Hailes
  3. Tonic : Ray Harvey

Division 3
  1. Mixed Nuts : Tim & Lisa O’Grady
  2. Darkside of the Moon : Steve Bolton
  3. Tub Thumper : G. Heard & A. Creed

GOS- Sunday 13th October 2019

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed GOS on Sunday.  Starting with an introductory talk about MYC, its committee, who were in attendance and available volunteering opportunities. This was followed by tea and coffee, an outline of the course and what to expect from Coach Mel.

Janine and Anna led the ladies out onto two keel boats waiting at the pier.  Sailing on Bill's Phoenix and Andrew's Y2T.
With a short explanation about the boats, the girls were soon assisting with steering, crossing the deck during tacks, using the grinders and flaking the main.

Light winds and sunshine made for a lovely time out on the water as we sailed towards the city and "B" marker, Mount Eliza.

Thanks also to Tara and Suzanne assisting on board on the day.

Team MYC NSW Youths Report

9/10/2019

MYC had fabulous representation up at Lake Macquarie with 20+ Kids out on the water for NSW Youths. Congratulations to everyone that competed and thank you to the NSW hosts for running a great family friendly event that is to be highly recommended.

The team had some outstanding results with Henry Levenspiel first through the finish line in every race, winning the Optimist Intermediate fleet. We had 4 other Optis out on the water enjoying the great fun, learning conditions.

In the 29’er fleet Zac Hayes and his crew came away with third in the 27 boat fleet, an outstanding effort in tough conditions.

Our 3 Lasers represented the club well with Daniel Laverty performance a standout in the 4.7 coming away midfleet.

Last but not least with our biggest representation in the 420 class we had 7 boats making up almost half fleet. Digby & Jay managed to go through 2 spinnaker poles, and always had the biggest smiles. James and Lachie Caldwell came away with 2nd thanks to the great team MYC effort for rigging up a brand new mast in under 20 minutes, a task that would usually take 2 hours. The boys made the start by just 5 minutes after a very quick tow to the start line. The team MYC spirit that’s continuously displayed around the country makes everyone proud. We look forward  to seeing Team MYC up at Sail Sandy next weekend before the official opening of the season on the 20th of October. By Opening Day this group will have competed in 3 regattas for the season already.
