We had a good news announcement from the Victorian Government stating that most COVID restrictions were removed from 11:59pm, Friday 22nd of April, as result of the high level of community vaccinations. 
The  changes for sports clubs are:

Vaccination and check in

• Members and guests are no longer required to have two doses or show their vaccination status before entering our (or any) venue.
• The club is not required to keep any attendance records or maintain a check-in marshal.
• The requirement for members, guests & staff to check in using the Service Victoria app has ended.

Face masks

• Are no longer required in hospitality and retail settings or at events of any size.

The announcement stated that a number of critical and common-sense settings will be retained, including the essential requirement to isolate for seven days following a COVID-19 diagnosis.

Sailors, siblings and sailing friends are more than welcome, but all need a ticket. Those under 15 need a parent/guardian to be in attendance for the duration of the event. 
Tickets are $25 per person and include socks

69th Apollo Bay – Saturday 14th May, the last of the ocean season.  Sail in company on the Great Ocean Road “Sail” 


50th Melbourne to Hobart – December 27th, if you have ever considered doing this race, this year is the one with 48 entries already in.

Over the last couple of weekends, the club has hosted the Victorian Schools Team Racing Championships.   Having over 150 races and more than 12 MYC children competing, with volunteers arriving as early as 6am and some leaving after 6pm. We also had helpers from other clubs and schools.
 
It’s hard to mention everyone and apologies if I missed you. John Mills travelled every day from the other side of the city leaving before 5am.  Ben Jones and Mel Hitchen-Haw worked well before the event. Mel set a new standard with the food ordering and coordination amongst many other roles. Ben was last to leave on Sunday afternoon. Young Phoebe Cameron (youngest Volunteer) from Davey’s Bay did three days on the finish boat. Geoff Eldridge and Glenys Hitchen as race officers. AS Judges, especially Luke Tupper had massive input to the event. Ross Kilbourn put in some big hours on the BBQ, as well as Simon Lee, Michelle Jackson, and Shelia Young who did more than one shift, and many others did an hour or 4.  Immi Weber spent three days on the change over boat, co-ordinating the essential task of working out who was sailing next. Eick re-built many Pacers. Private Ribs were donated. Maureen Cooper, Brain Fraser, contributed as did so many others, Andrew even looked at a head wound from NSW on Friday via zoom.

On Saturday the club had Hobson’s Bay arrive, our club Keelboats racing around the bay, as well as this large event, and yet not a crossed word. The whole team worked together so well, with the sport and club the winners.
 
In the end, as nav. lights where being considered, the Peninsula Grammar School came out winners with a number of MYC members in that team:

From PGS were Ada Edwards, Will White, Ella Bremen, Jack Eickmeyer, James Jackson and Lachie Weber. 
From Haileybury - Heath Jones. 
From Toorak - Liv Cameron
From Woodleigh - Lucy Laverty, Daniel Laverty, Sassy Taylor, Digby Taylor and Leigh Harvey. 

The racing in the finals was at times high pressure, umpire flags waving, loud voices, penalty turns, changing positions happening at a speed that was hard to stay on top of. In the 4th final race Peninsula (with 4 out of 6 MYC members) went from a losing position, to taking out the title in the last minute before the finish line.
 
Over 15 years since Junior sailing at the club was virtually restarted from scratch, it has had some wonderful achievements, and that continues to be the case. We can be, and should be proud of our Club and its sailors . Back to work and schools today for a rest. Was it worth it? I think so.

A team of young sailors from the Mornington Yacht Club have won both the Open and Under 22 Divisions of the Sailing Champions League - Asia Pacific Final, an international team racing series, and are to head later this year to compete in the World Title Finals in Germany.

The competition, through a series of qualifying races in identical yachts, identifies the most successful Club in each country, who then compete for the title of the ‘Best Sailing Club of the Year, Worldwide’. Each team is made up of two male and two female sailors.

The Mornington team comprised James Jackson (skipper aged 17), Jack Eickmeyer (17), and Lily and Matilda Richardson (19).  James last year was named “Australian Youth Sailor of the Year” by yachting’s peak body, Australian Sailing, Jack Eickmeyer is the top junior Laser sailor in Victoria, and the Richardson girls represented Australia in the World Youth Championships in 2019. All of the team are products of the outstanding junior and youth sailing program at the Mornington Yacht Club.

The Asia Pacific Final was sailed in Newcastle on the 26 and 27 March, with the Mornington team winning both the Under 22 and Open Divisions from 15 qualifying clubs from around Australia and Vanuatu.

There have been amendments made to the Pyramid Challenge SSI's due to the size and nature of the Victorian Schools Team Racing State Championships running at MYC over the weekend.


With more than 100 races per day scheduled (yes, 100!) and involving over 100 competitors in close proximity to the pier, safety of all competitors in all fleets is paramount.

The amendment includes, but is not limited to:

• Change to the Starting procedure
• Change to the Finishing procedure
• A 'Virtual mark' may be used instead of the East Cardinal
