MYC member James Craig is planning a trip down the east coast of Tassie for approx 10 days down and 10 days trip back, looking to take any additional crew members that may be interested in coming. Crew members can choose to do the whole trip, or any of the stages either there or return etc. We will be mostly day tripping our way there - not many over night sails - the longest leg will be approx 130 Nm.
We will be leaving St Kilda on Thursday night (24th March, to head out the heads on Friday 25th), arriving in Hobart before Sunday 3rd. The return trip should have us back in Melbourne 16-17 April. It will be aboard a 68' Gulfstar "Mr Percival" - The yacht sleeps 8 in 4 berths, very comfortable sailing. Anyone is welcome to come sailing with me prior to the trip on most weekends, or come up to St Kilda to check the boat out. Attached is the intended passage plan for both stages of the voyage, along with some photos of the scenery. James' contact number is: 0449 900 842 or email is: [email protected] The Royal Yacht Club of Victoria (RYCV) played host to Race Day 2 of the Port Philip Women’s Championship Series (PPWCS) yesterday, Sunday 21st February, 2016. Similar to the first race this race is named after an influential female member of the sailing community. For the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria they named their race The Val Hodge Trophy after the first female skipper of the Club, Val Hodge. Today’s race saw twelve boats share the start line in welcoming conditions. RYCV’s Race Officer, David LeRoy, thought the conditions were well suited for the series: “Today’s conditions were ideal for the second race of the (PPWCS). The breeze was slow to get started and found it hard to settle. Once it did settle in it was nice; it’s been a little bit shifty, but that’s what you get.” The Port Phillip Women’s Championship Series enjoys welcoming new teams to the water. One such team is Kelly Knowles and her boat, ‘Take One’. Knowles has been competing in the PPWCS for the past 2 years but only this year has bought her own boat and joined the rest. “I’ve never done the full PPWC Series before so am very excited for this year. I was fortunate enough to skipper a boat at the Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta (AWKR) and really enjoyed the experience. This series is great as it gives women the opportunity to compete in an environment where we can feel more comfortable. It’s great to have all the different ratings so it creates an even playing field and pushes everyone just that little bit further.” Racing today was a three lap windward- leeward course held at the northern end of Port Phillip Bay. Fiery battles were seen on the race course with an emphasis on strategic thinking and boat speed. Such a battle was seen between Ellipse and 2015 AWKR winner, Executive Decision. Executive Decision lead the fleet with a strong start picking the shifts on the first upwind and building a reasonable lead. A fast downwind and some smart fore- thinking pushed Ellipse to overtake them and win line honours and AMS today. Gretchin Mohan, skipper of Ellipse, explained their performance: “As a team we competed in the AWKR last year but this is our first regatta together for this season. We’re very happy with our result today and put it down to keeping our eyes out of the boat and focussed on where the next shift would be. We love this event and want to thank the volunteers, committees and staff who put this event together.” Congratulations to all competitors; results for the Val Hodge Trophy below: AMS:

It is beautifully restored and all South African Mahogany. Previously owned by Sandringham legend Roy Hoffert "Hoffey" and before Bill Hodder. Bill capsized in the last race of an Olympic Trial to lose selection to John Bertrand in this boat. This weekend 10am -4pm each day on show will be "Hoffinn" plus Caraid, Athena, Heavy and Lighweight Sharpies, International Cadets, 12ft Cadet, VJ, Cherub, Fireballs , Mirror, Sabot, 420's, Flying fifteens, Etchells, Sailfish, Gwen 12, Opti's, Moth scow plus more The Mornington Yacht Club has come a long way since a meeting of eleven interested residents in February 1946 to the vibrant and diverse Club with over 750 members it is today. The founding group simply wanted to sail their assorted collection of boats off Shire Hall Beach. In May the same year the Shire Council leased to the Club an ex Army hut close to the pier. This served as the catalyst for development of competitive sailing. The Heavyweight Sharpie was introduced in 1947 and served as the backbone of the Club for the next ten years. Interclub sailing took place between Black Rock, Mordialloc, Chelsea and Frankston Yacht Clubs. The Sharpie era culminated in the Club holding a very successful State Championship in 1951. In the early days there was limited training for junior sailors other than learning the ropes as a bailer boy in Sharpies. This all changed in 1956 with the introduction of the Sabot as a training boat for juniors which was supported by a home building programme. This established the foundation for today’s Club and introduced hundreds of boys and girls to sailing as a sport. For many years the Sabot fleet was the largest in the State and Mornington members were very successful winning six State Titles and two Australian Championships. In the past ten years or so the Sabot has been replaced by the Optimist with similar success. In 1964 Club membership stood at 156 but following a grant to the Club of a portion of reclaimed land adjacent to the pier a new clubhouse was built. Membership rapidly increased and new classes were introduced including the Gwen 12, Cherub, Fireball and the Mirror dinghy as a family class. The first Flying Fifteen in Australia sailed at Mornington and became one of the major classes at the Club. Several are still sailing today and share the hard-stand area with a competitive fleet of Etchells. In the mid 1950’s a strong keelboat fleet developed at the Club and ocean racing flourished with Mornington yachts winning Divisions of the Sydney to Hobart, Queenscliff to Devonport, Melbourne to Hobart and Sydney to Noumea ocean races. Keelboat racing is still important today with weekly races for two divisions of keelboats and for the strong trailable yacht fleet which continues to grow each year. Over the years Club members have won around twenty State and five National Titles and one World Championship. The Club has also hosted several State, National and one World championship. However, not all the sailing at Mornington is ultra competitive as the Club runs a hugely popular Thursday evening twilight series in summer. In 1999 Club members established a Sailability programme which provides sailing experience for people with disabilities. The programme has been run very successfully ever since with sessions held twice weekly throughout the sailing season. A participant in the programme has won a Victorian Championship and sailed successfully in National and International events. Training programmes are also run for local schoolchildren and indeed for anyone, at any level, who desires to learn to sail. Seventy years on and Mornington Yacht Club is a vibrant, active member of the Mornington community. On the weekend of February 20 and 21 Mornington Yacht Club will hold a ‘Back to Mornington YC Weekend’. The Club will be open to members of the public and past members are encouraged to attend. There will displays of historic photographs and boats, a 70th Anniversary fleet race on the Saturday close to pier and shore viewing places, live music , free morning and afternoon tea, opportunities to sail and more. For details call 03 5975 7001. Sabots were a major part of the club and ideally we would like a fleet of sabots at the club on Saturday and Sunday for our 70th Celebrations this weekend. Can anyone assist? If so please contact Rod on 0477522750 or [email protected]. We are are happy to pick up if required.
Pics below of Team MYC arriving and sailing at DBYC for Neate Starkins Cup and the Lidgett Cup next weekend. Jack Eickmeyer and Lachie Weber had a win each on Sunday to help Mornington Yacht Club win the Cup. Congratulations Team MYC and thank you Daveys Bay YC for hosting.
