In addition to presentation and from the Floor:

1. Achievements - Graeme Alexander GA

T. O'Grady, Loans - Please explain in more detail the total figure and the merge.
The loan total is the merging of
2010 CBA $75,000 Safe Harbour Loan
2011 CBA $175,000 2001 Rocks Loan
Members Loans $340,000
Capital Works $180000 - Office, Quartermaster, Back Deck and Front Entrance, Marine Engines and Slipway improvements
Balance being the additional Capital Works for future use.

Jane Storey - Can Peter De Lange still work at the MYC and  did he volunteer to leave or was he asked to leave?  GA: All accredited contractors are still most welcome to work in the Yard and especially Peter due to the respect he has at MYC.  In terms of the second part Peter was asked to leave as it was felt the right time for a change to occur.

Thanks were given to the great work by The Historical Committee and the Soiree Committee for two really successful events this year.

Additional thanks to Michelle Pickford for getting up and running the Girls Out Social Sailing initiative.

Greg Martin - Thanked the committee for what has been achieved under the leadership of Graeme Alexander.

2. Finances - Jon Phillips JP

Terry Clough: Could the members receive a copy of the Budget?  JP - No as a budget is an internal working document for the committee to manage and to distribute to all for them to comment on would not be controllable. Jon was not aware of any club that supplied the budget.

Grahame Holmes suggested a summary that highlighted some of the features of the Budget. This was thought to be a good idea and one that could be shared with members.

Grahame Homes asked whether the cash projection to improve in the next 8 years had any addition revenue items other than the current Business as Usual. JP - Yard Shed Rental  + ability to lease additional space, i.e Shops , Dive Ctr etc..

3. Sailing - Chris Jackson CJ

In addition to Chris's report he spoke of:
The fantastic number of MYC Youth Members in the Victorian Sailing Team.
Winter Series at MYC starting this year.
To make the 2017 Schnapper Point regatta bigger in 2017
Sydney 38 and Super 11 State Championships possibly being at MYC in Feb 2017.
The huge amount of volunteers that assassinated at the recent Club Marine Championships
Sophie Jackson and Ella Sharman were heading to the 420 Worlds in Italy in August to represent Australia.

4. Constitution - Stephen Bardsley SB

Grahame Holmes - An excellent first draft document  and complimented the Governance Committee for their work as having read the Corporations Act and the current Memorandum of Articles it did appear to be consistent and cover what was required. He also raised that the new Constitution is much needed document to bring the club into compliance with the Corporations act.

He asked had the Governance committee considered more prescriptive changes to ensure there was no area that all previous good work could be spoilt. Such as the size of the quorum of an AGM being only 15 voting members.

Ray Harvey asked whether Yachting Victoria could assist in this regards. SB replied that the other Yacht Club constitutions were the best references and especially those that have been amended recently and are also a Public Company Limited by Guarantee.

David Beeson asked what changes had already been received.  SB - Formatting was common but in terms of significant changes they were the
Term of the Commodore being restricted to 2 years
the number of Board members that could call a general meeting and
the Secretary no longer being elected but rather appointed by the General Committee.

Jane Storey - Believes 1.2 and 1.7 in reference to The Common Seal is now an obsolete requirement.

5. Additional Questions

Liz Thomas - Recently attended the U3A course operated by Michelle Pickford and had a wonderful time. As a new member she complimented the good work of the committee and was excited about being part of this club.

Chris Jackson asked for a show of hands whether they read Tattler and /or Facebook. It was evident by those present that E Tattler and the Web was still the predominant source of information.

Graeme Alexander asked those that would prefer to receive their information in hard copy could they please let Sarah in the office know.

Graeme thanked all for coming and  very happy for  these General Members Meetings  to continue.

Notes - Rod Austin and please advise any changes required.

Mooring  Meeting  Wed 4th May @ 6.30pm  CANCELLED

23/4/2016

This meeting has been CANCELLED

Hi Mooring Permit Holders and concerned MYC members

I am pleased to advise the establishment of Mornington Harbour Mooring Working party will be
Trevor Neate, Tim Melville, Graeme Taylor and Rod Austin since the last meeting.

The General Committee were confident that the knowledge and experience they have of the Harbour , the moorings , the history, ability to acquire marine resources when required and boat owner representatives are covered within  this group. They will be reporting directly back to the MYC General Committee and mooring holders will be kept informed of any progress.

However there appears to be additional concerns from permit holders and  MYC members  than just the retraction of the recent letter and the establishment of the Mooring Working Group

As this is the case our MYC Honorary Solicitor and Club Secretary Simon Purcell , 28 years experience as a property lawyer,  has agreed to speak  to you all in regards to those concerns on Wednesday May 4th  at 6.30pm.
Simon and the rest of the MYC committee are happy to address any additional questions that you may have since the last meeting.

I look forward to your attendance of those that are interested.

Proposed New Draft Constitution

19/4/2016

Picture
Click here for the proposed draft new MYC Constitution.
And below an important explanation as to why we are proposing this new constitution.

Click Here for the Existing Memorandum of Articles which are to be replaced by the proposed Constitution.

MYC Incorporation and the History of Companies Law in Victoria.
To understand why we need to have a new constitution one needs to understand a bit about the history of the Club’s incorporation.

Mornington Yacht Club was founded in 1946, hence our 70th birthday celebration this year.

The Club was incorporated in September 1964 under the Companies Act 1961 Victoria some 18 years after formation.

Why did this occur? To limit members’ liability as the Club was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee.

Why was this so important? Legal action taken against another club resulted in all their members having to contribute financially to a settlement. The Yachting Council of Victoria now Yachting Victoria recommended to clubs that they incorporate so that their members’ liability was limited. Under our current Articles of Association that amount is 10pds.

However in the mean time the Commonwealth and State Governments were making attempts to bring State companys’ acts together under a uniform Commonwealth Act.

This led to a national/federal/commonwealth Corporations Act 1989.

The Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) superseded the Corporations Act 1989 (Cth) to become the legislation governing corporations today. This was only enacted following a reference of power by the States through State legislation transferring corporation’s power to the Commonwealth.

Companies Act 1961 Victoria was repealed 10th February 2010 and MYC incorporation was brought under the Commonwealth Corporations Act 2001 which remains in force today.

Today MYC although having Memorandum and Articles of Association dated 1964 is still subject to the Corporations Act 2001. The revision of our constitution is therefore to make the document relevant to the current law and revise some concepts that are no longer in vogue with those of 1964.

Where is a new constitution now? Draft 1 was presented to the General Committee at its October 2015 meeting. It was agreed that this document would be sent out for a legal review. The General Committee received the reviewed draft with comments at its December meeting and the Corporate Governance sub-committee has now implemented the recommended changes to produce a final draft for consideration of the membership.

When will the members get to view this final draft? Here it is now, please see the copy attached.

When will the members vote to adopt the new constitution? The final document will be an item of special business for the AGM in June this year.

Stephen J. Bardsley,
Chairman,
Corporate Governance Sub-Committee.

Race four makes history for 2016 Port Phillip Women's Championship Series

18 April 2016
Round four of the 2016 Port Phillip Women’s Championship Series, hosted by Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, saw 25 boats hit the start line, yesterday the 17th April, in a generous 10 – 15 knots sou’westerly. With only one more race of the series these participation numbers, combined with the previous 3 races make this season’s Championship Series the most successful year in Women and Girls in Sailing since it’s initiation in 2013.

This event was originally named the ‘Lady Skippers’ Race’ but in 2005 was renamed the ‘Jennifer Goldsmith Perpetual Trophy’. Despite the name change it’s still retained the original regulations for the Lady Skippers Race whereby the helm must be female and mixed crews are welcome. There were, however, still some all female crews racing including that of Joanne Norbury's 'Executive Decision.'

The course was a two lapper around ‘Royal Melbourne’s’ fixed marks allowing teams to practice their starboard mark roundings, gybes, reaching and tactical upwind sailing. Boat handling skills from all teams were exceptional with all the small tasks such as communication, timing and execution demonstrated as second nature.

25 boats made for a crowded start line putting emphasis on getting a clear lane. Some boats fell behind and had to tack out, while others held on and persisted to the left, splitting the fleet in two. Those who went left gained from going inshore while those who went right needed a strong downwind to close the gap. For the 2016 Jennifer Goldsmith Perpetual Trophy winner, ‘Silhouette’, being persistent and conservative was their game plan. Claire Scanlon, skipper of ‘Silhouette’, explains:

“We were lucky enough to have a clean start but being a 32 footer had to work really hard in keeping up with the tail end of the big boats who wanted to go left. We were able to stick in there and that gave us a strong position for the rest of the race. We also tried to stay away from the traffic but was sure to be aggressive at the marks so we could secure our spot for the next leg.”

Not only did ‘Silhouette’ take out the YV Performance Handicapping division but they also scored 2nd place in AMS to ‘Frenzy.’ ‘Salamander III’ came first in the IRC division with ‘Audacious’ not far behind and for this particular race there was no Non- Spinnaker racers.

The Goldsmith family not only fund the perpetual trophy but they present prizes to the top three winner in the Performance Handicap Division. All entry fees from this event go towards melanoma research.

Results:

AMS:
  1. Frenzy – Stephanie Strong
  2. Silhouette – Claire Scanlon
  3. Take Five – Christine Pfieffer

IRC:
  1. Salamander III – Monica Jones
  2. Audacious – Tracey Baldwin
  3. Serious Yahoo – Vanessa Twigg

PHS:
  1. Silhouette – Claire Scanlon
  2. Frenzy – Stephanie Strong
  3. Serious Yahoo – Vanessa Twigg
This event celebrates women in sailing and aims to attract more female skipper and crew into racing. Although not a leg of the Port Phillip Women’s Championship Series, the Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta shares the same vision. This annual event is in it’s 26th year and often attracts more than 160 participants with this year aiming to smash those numbers. The dates for this event are the 11 -13 June and will also be held at the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron. For more information and to register for this event please click here.

The final leg of the 2016 Port Phillip Women’s Championship Series is the annual BLiSS regatta held over two days at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club from the 30 April – 1 May. Practice sessions have been highly successful with over 40 participants coming to each event. For more information and to register for this last race of the season visit the Women and Girls in Sailing website or their Facebook Page. For progressive results on the series click here.

Schnapper Point Road Works, 27th or 28th April

19/4/2016

Dear All,
Please note that the final asphalt wearing course for the carpark and new turning circle is planned for one (1) day on either Wednesday 27th or Thursday 28th April (weather depending).
A VMS (Variable Message Sign) board will be located in the first car park space on Schnapper Point Drive on Monday 25th April advising of the carpark closure for the selected date.
The entire carpark/ pier forecourt will be closed for all vehicles, however the turning circle will still allow access to the boat ramp and the additional parking around the Yacht Club.
This necessary inconvenience will be the last, so we would appreciate your understanding for the overall benefit of the pier precinct.
If you require any further information please let me know.
Kind regards,
James

MYC Thank You's - Last Weekend at the Victorian Junior and Youth Championship

12/4/2016

Message from Chris Jackson

I will have final figures for the regatta in the next day or two. But it was a good event for MYC. Perhaps not our best on water, but the conditions where not easy.......Total 151 boats.

My phone tells me I did over 24000 steps on sat and sun, no wonder I am stuffed this morning.

We must thank
  • Royal Brighton YC with special mention to Paul Pascoe whom is just such a great person to have involved.
  • SYC Steve Aulich thanks so much for his efforts and the beautiful George. Hope we can repay him and or Sandringham at some stage.
  • Geoff Eldridge thank you for your assistance.
  • DBYC Commodore Nic Peasley: Thank you to DBYC for their support greatly appreciate working so closely with our neighbouring club. Richard and Glynis special mention.

  • Brodie Goozee and the Mornington Peninsula Radio station RPPFM  for supporting the sport of sailing and adding to the event, welcome any time.
  • Over 70 MYC volunteers  that contributed to the successful club marine junior and youth championships over the weekend and also to those that helped mid-week with the coaching clinic. Also the MYC staff that go way above and beyond what’s expected. We have received a large number of texts and emails congratulation MYC for yet again running a great event on and off the water.  A special mention was made at presentation of the incredible work Pam Lane and Pam Heyes put in, whilst they were not alone I hope all volunteers consider that that presentation was an acknowledgement of all their efforts.  Thank you to the Rocks for making the Champagne they received available. The members whom had their boats moved or access restricted thanks for your patience. Thank you Noel Heyes and Graeme Vertigan for managing the yard access, trailer storage  and configurations. We had a large number of MYC members competing in the event. So a rest now for the regattas, next year may see the trainable states and the year after the flying fifteen states. Team MYC delivers yet again.
Yours in sailing

MEDIA RELEASE: Mornington showcases premier junior and youth sailing event

12/4/2016

2016 Club Marine Victorian Junior and Youth Championships
Mornington showcases premier junior and youth sailing event

11 April 2016

- For Immediate Publication -

Mornington Yacht Club played host to the 2016 Club Marine Victorian Junior and Youth Coaching Clinic and Championships. With over 150 boats, 190 competitors and more than 200 parents, volunteers and coaches this event was truly a collaborative effort from all.

The Coaching Clinic saw 10 classes attend with some athletes travelling from interstate and others as far as New Zealand to be here. This clinic welcomed some of Australia’s best coaches including International Cadet World Champion Coach Tony Bull, 2004 and 2008 Olympian Sarah Ogilvie and dual Olympian, Krystal Weir. Having such high quality coaches created a great level of respect to what what being taught and while also installing a strong work ethic.

All three days of the coaching clinic provided excellent training conditions; sailors were able to perfect their light wind technique and were able to learn necessary survival skills for unplanned squalls. Wednesday proved to test the mental and physical skills of the sailors when a strong squall passed through Port Phillip Bay and all classes were called back to shore. Darren Bundock attended the Championships to coach the up and coming Cat sailors and was able to reflect on his sailing career and learning to step outside his comfort zone.

“It’s important for sailors to be able to go out in conditions that are outside their comfort zone providing there is the necessary support around. For parents, understanding that equipment may be broken in heavier conditions and that it's all part of this sport allows you/ your child to push themselves and their boundaries to get to the next level in their sailing and having highly experienced coaches around is the best time to do this. Well done to those who embraced the tough conditions and well done to the coaches for creating this as a learning experience."

Parents and coaches passed comments that this was the best coaching clinic Yachting Victoria has held and Yachting Victoria's Sailing Manager, Lesley Fasala, believes it comes down to the values installed by the coaches and parents:

“We’re seeing a new wave of junior and youth sailors coming through who are all eager to learn. It was great to see the coaches installing a strong work ethic and level of enjoyment in everyone. (Yachting Victoria) is always looking for ways to improve this event and we’ve received some great comments and feedback which we look forward to implementing in our future events.”

Along with the on water session the Coaching Clinic hosted three guest speakers delivering a holistic overview on the sport of sailing. Matti Clements, from Mental Edge Consulting, spoke about understanding the psychological aspects of sport as an athlete and as a parent, Glen Stanaway, from Yachting Australia, talked about rules, protests and how to deal with them and Warrick Pearson, AST, VIS and MyPhysio Physiotherapist, demonstrated the appropriate steps sailors should be taking to look after their bodies before, during and after sailing.

The coaching clinic finished with each of the athletes completing a class debrief on what they had accomplished over the past few days and what they intend to work on in the coming regatta and off-season.

The majority of those who participated in the Coaching Clinic stayed on to use those newly learned skills in some racing at the 2016 Club Marine Victorian Junior and Youth Championships across Saturday 9th – Sunday 10th April.

Chris Jackson, Rear Commodore of Mornington Yacht Club, Event Director to this regatta and PRO for the event has been involved with the coaching clinic and Championships for 2 years now and advocates that the sailing culture for an event or Yacht Club is created by the people involved there:

"We've got a great team of officials who understand sailing and love giving back to the junior and youth sailors. The flag officers at Mornington Yacht Club pride themselves on being approachable and welcoming and really enjoy being in the action. Being a sailor and a parent myself I understand what communications parents want when they're on shore. Despite the tiring nature of wearing two hats as PRO and Event Director I've been able to provide a running commentary of the decisions made by the Race Officers to the parents as soon as they occur - an advancement I believe should be used more often in modern race management."

The size of the event attracted local FM sports radio station, 98.7 FM- The Voice of the Peninsula. This station was able to interview some of the key event personal and also sailors about how they're enjoying the event. For all the interviews visit their website by clicking here.

This event brings families and friends together, it creates camaraderie and promotes a strong work ethic. It’s great to see that although the Championships are a competition all sailors played fairly and tried to take as much from this experience as possible; this being said the racing was close and intense.

These Championships tested the skills that each athlete had learned over the last few days with conditions varying from 0 knots on Saturday to gusts of 23 knots of Sunday. Saturdays racing saw a mixed number of races conducted across the different classes with some such as the Lasers fitting only 1 race in while the 420’s were able to complete 4 races. As some classes were only able to get 1 race complete there was added pressure to get on the water on Sunday.

Sunday’s weather saw gusts of 20 – 25 knots in the morning which kept all classes except the Lasers and 420s postponed on shore. As the weather dissipated the remaining junior and youth classes were released and were able to join the others in completing the Championships. All classes ended up completing between 5 and 7 seven races - providing a great playing field for all competitors. After a long day on the water, all classes returned to shore to attend the prize giving ceremony. Below is a list of the winners in each Class. For a full list of the results please click here:
