GINAN WIN ALL DIVISIONS IN APOLLO BAY RACE 2024

28/5/2024

Media Release
27 May 2024
Tactics and determination secures Valiant the win in the 2024 Apollo Bay Race

Valiant, an Adams 10.6 skippered by Jason Farnell from the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, is the overall winner of this year’s Melbourne to Apollo Bay Race.

The 52 nautical mile race, run by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), tested the resolve of the most patient sailors, but Valiant was more than up to the challenge, winning overall on AMS handicap, with a corrected time of 9 hours, 28 minutes and 25 seconds, nearly 10 minutes ahead of Ginan and a further ten minutes back to How Bizarre.

Peccadillo, skippered by Charles Meredith, took out line honours for multihulls while Scarlet Runner, skippered by Rob Date, was the first monohull home.

With a 6am kickoff, the near record 43-boat fleet made its way to the start line in the dark with just the city lights casting iridescent colours on the waters of Port Phillip Bay and then nothing but moonlight as they exited the heads and approached the start in the vicinity of Canberra Wreck.

The soft autumnal weather and forecast light winds proved a challenge for race management and sailors, with the breezes fluctuating between 3 and 15 knots during the morning resulting in nearly half the fleet retiring from the race, frustrated by the lack of breeze.

Farnell, sailing with Ben Ramage, his daughter Imogen and son Will, a young dinghy sailor, was genuinely surprised with the win which bodes well for the newcomers to offshore sailing.

“Starting the race in the dark was interesting, as was avoiding the over-optimistic port tackers on the start line, but we did really well in the first half of the race to Lorne… it was truly glamour sailing.

“I think we were about sixth to the [virtual] gate and then we made it a priority not to lose too much ground on the second half through to Apollo Bay,” said Farnell.

Farnell credits his win to his crew and their tactics in the first half of the race.

“We have a pretty small and a mostly family crew… we were generally pretty happy with our race and were really quite surprised to feature in the results which we didn’t actually realise until we were on the way back [to Melbourne],” said Farnell.

Farnell’s homework before the race certainly served the team well on the water.

“We had a very good run – we studied the course and the weather a lot beforehand but what made it a bit trickier was the breeze coming through in bands throughout the race, which meant the breeze didn’t fully favour boats close to the shore or the boats further offshore,” said Farnell.

Farnell, who also took out AMS Division 2, bought Valiant in 2023 to introduce the family to some adventure sailing and found the race to Apollo Bay a great introduction to offshore racing.

“The ORCV does a great job running these events – they make it all seamless which really helps and ensures we all have a great experience,” said Farnell.

Cameron McKenzie and Nigel Jones, skippers of the J111 Ginan, have not put a foot wrong this season and the race to Apollo Bay Race was no exception with the experienced team finishing second across the line behind Scarlet Runner.

McKenzie and Jones, both from the Mornington Yacht Club, were thrilled to clinch the 2023-24 Coastal Championship with yet another strong performance in the final offshore race of the season.

“We got off to a good clean start, despite dodging lots of boats in the chaos on the start line and got our 1.5 chute up early to get clear of dirty air.

“We were seeing more breeze than the weather models were predicting before the race … our pre-race game plan was to sail wide and out to sea but the wind wasn’t aligning with this so we decided to sail straight down the rhumb line to make progress to Apollo Bay as quickly as possible.

“We were in good shape at the gate and were fourth across the line behind Scarlet Runner, Extasea and the multihull, Peccadillo.”

“We were aware that we had fallen foul of the wind shadows off Lorne before, so when we could see that the top boats were starting to slow, we made the conscious decision to sail a bit wider than the guys up front and were lucky enough to make some gains.

“We had lots of sail changes, from our J1 to the Code Zero and then the windseeker which was actually the best choice.

“After passing Peccadillo and Extasea, we had a good dice with Scarlet [Runner] for a few hours, then she got some speed on and took the line honours win and we were second across the line,” said McKenzie.

Ginan also took out Division 1 on AMS, ORC and PHS and was the overall winner on ORC.

McKenzie credits the success of Ginan to the skills and sailing ability of the crew and helms.

“Our crew does a great job of trimming in all conditions, they really are outstanding,” said McKenzie.

Scott Robinson, skipper of the Seaquest RP36, How Bizarre, also navigated the race complexities well and capped off a solid offshore season, finishing in third on AMS overall, and second in Division 1 on AMS, ORC and PHS.

Robinson recounted his strategy for the race, highlighting the inshore / offshore dilemma facing tacticians, and also shared a few ‘highlights’ from the race.

“Our race tactics were to stay out wide off the coast before and after going through the ‘midway’ gate off Lorne.

“We’re always nervous about going inshore along the hills in this race because it’s always been like the Bermuda Triangle for us.

“We had an amazing start…we turned from starboard tack around the start boat on the starting gun and probably would have been first boat across the line, the only issue was our keel hooked the start boat’s anchor line so we stopped dead in our tracks. From there, it took another ten to fifteen minutes to get unhooked, so we went from first to last across the line.

“Once clear we had to work hard to get back in touch in the race – I’m really proud of the crew and their efforts in making this happen…to get to Apollo Bay was very special to us.

“I want to acknowledge the great work of the ORCV Race Committee for managing this race around the weather… it was tricky but I thought the Lorne ‘gate’ was a great concept in case the weather went completely vertical, and because of it, we were able to finish the race,” said Robinson.

Interest in double-handed sailing continues to rise, with some competitors using the Apollo Bay Race as a lead-up event to the 2025 Melbourne to Osaka Race.

Maverick, skippered by Tony Hammond and Rod Smallman took the double-handed silverware on PHS handicap from Alex Team Macadie, skippered by Jock Macadie, and Joker X2, skippered by Grant Chipperfield and Martin Vaughan.

Maverick capped off a great season to win the 38 South Yacht Sales Double-Handed Offshore Championship. The title is awarded to the best-performed Monohull Double-Handed Division yacht, decided on PHS handicap results.

While the race may have been slow going, the fleet was entertained by frolicking dolphins, seals, baby penguins and even a whale, while ORCV Life Member Neville Rose celebrated his 60th birthday onboard Blue Water Tracks complete with candles and cake.

In line with the ORCV’s commitment to marine sustainability and clean oceans, the fleet was asked to eliminate single use water bottles and profile reusable ones throughout the race with Nat Reidy from Vagabond the lucky winner of a $100 voucher from Ronstan for her commitment to this cause.

The Apollo Bay Race is the last of the ORCV’s offshore sailing program for the 2023-24 sailing season.

Our Golden Retriever needs some love and attention. Concerned citizens have debated whether her arthritic bones are still up to the job and decided with the injection of steroids into her hull she should come up like new.

This winter we will tidy up the old girl. Things like -repair the head, fill in holes, repaint the floor, look into a hard top, fix the bloody windlass, takeover Morning Mist’s foil to get her up on a plane more quickly, fit heated and ventilated seats with lambs wool covers, provide a coffee machine and micro wave, tint the windows and hang lace curtains supplied by Gail Brandhoff, lay lime green shagpile carpet courtesy of a recent benefactor, set up a course board that is waterproof and legible from atleast 100 metres and finally how about some wind instruments - that might be useful on a Start boat.

ORCV | Apollo Bay Race & Coastal Championship decider

Near record fleet for 2024 Apollo Bay Race and ORCV Coastal Championship decider

As the sailing season draws to a close, offshore sailors are now focusing on the Melbourne to Apollo Bay Race which starts at 9am on Saturday the 25th of May.

The 52 nautical mile Category 3 coastal sprint is the final event of the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria’s (ORCV) Coastal Championship series.

The popular race, which has a near record fleet, starts at Queenscliff with the fleet leaving Port Phillip Heads before turning right along the coast, finishing at the seaside town of Apollo Bay.

Known locally as the Great Ocean Road ‘Sail’, the race takes the fleet along one of the world’s most stunning coastlines of beaches, sand dunes, cliff tops and dramatic headlands, nestled beneath the lush rainforests of the Otway Ranges in Victoria’s South West.

While the panoramic scenery offers breathtaking views for the sailors, the coastal environment can play a big part in sailing tactics, especially within 10 nautical miles of the finish with the area renowned for its holes and unpredictable conditions.

Top contenders for line honours include Rob Date’s Carkeek 43, Scarlet Runner, which has finally hit her straps after undergoing a year of improvements, with the team hoping for lighter conditions to maximise their sail options.

Toecutter, skippered by Robert Hick, will be relying on his secret weapon, Apollo Bay local Paul Cannon, who will be onboard and ready to pick the gusts and maximise the local conditions for the team.

If lighter conditions prevail, also expect another top performance from the J111 Ginan, co-skippered by Cameron McKenzie and Nigel Jones. The team has sailed exceptionally well over the last few seasons and is in the box seat to win the Coastal Championship.

Will McKenzie, a 20-year-old mechanical engineering student from Monash University and part time sailing coach, is on the bow of Ginan and sailing his first Apollo Bay race.

“This race is different to any that I have sailed before. I’ve done two Melbourne to Hobart races, but I expect this will be a short but intense race.

“It’s also really cool that I get to sail with my Dad and my godfather [Nigel Jones] and that I’ve got to sail some coastal sprint races with my Mum, Jo and twin-sister Sophie,” said McKenzie.

The young sailor will be one to watch in keelboat racing with his next big regatta the Newport-Bermuda race in June this year which he will sail on Blur, also a J111 boat.

First time Race Director Catherine North will be leading a mostly female race management team and is looking forward to overseeing her first Apollo Bay race.

“My memories of the race are different from many others – we had pretty steady winds during the race which actually turned blustery towards the end, which isn’t always the case people tell me.

“It can be challenging to get into the harbour at Apollo Bay especially if we have an easterly breeze, and with the winds coming down off the Otways, but it’s a beautiful race,” said North.

ORCV Sailing Captain and skipper of Cadibarra 11, Paul Roberts, has sailed the Apollo Bay Race 15 times and is wary of the unpredictable conditions.

“If you sail into a hole as you close in on the finish line, it can cause all sorts of problems. While it’s hard to feel confident, if we sail a smart race and get the call right about how far offshore we go, I think we’ll be OK.

“What we love about the race and the ORCV offshore sailing program is the opportunity we have for a mini sailing adventure - to sail with great company, to test our sailing skills in different conditions, and to stay over in some fantastic destinations, like King Island and Apollo Bay,” said Roberts.

The winner of the Coastal Championship is decided on AMS handicap with the Apollo Bay Race having normal weighting and the sprint races each having double weighting.

With three races completed, yachts will drop their highest scores putting Vertigo, skippered by Timothy and Clare Olding, and Ginan in equal first place on three points (before weighting is applied), although Vertigo is yet to enter the race.

Alien, skippered by Justin Brenan, and Pegasus, skippered by Andrew Lynch, go into this race in equal third place on eight points after dropping their highest scores but face an uphill battle to knock off the leaders once the points are doubled.

The race record for the Apollo Bay race was set in 1999 by the late Peter Blake sailing his Jones 37, KAOS, and stands at 5 hours, 24 minutes and 4 seconds but it is unlikely to be challenged this year.

The 2024 race welcomes several first timers including Belle, skippered by Richard Taylor and Kylie Balharrie from the Sandringham Yacht Club while Siesta, skippered by Robert Coco, is sailing her first Category 3 race.

The double-handed entries continue to grow with Jokerx2, skippered by Grant Chipperfield and Peter Dowdney and Quest, skippered by Peter Tardrew and Rod Gunther, sailing well and likely to feature in the results.

Bob Armstrong | VALE

14/5/2024

Dear MYC friends,

We are sad to advise that Bob Armstrong passed away peacefully the morning of Monday 13th May after his long fight against leukemia.

A member since 1969, he made an outstanding contribution over a long period, seeing many changes.  He was a sailor  with exceptional skills and his sailing results over nearly 30 years demonstrate that.

In the Flying Fifteen class he won 5 Club Championships in his boat ‘Emma’ over the period 1973 to 1984 and during his time in the Class he was 2nd in one 1976/77 State Title and 5th in another.

Graduating to the s80 Class when this Div 2 keelboat was introduced to the Club he won 2 Div 2 Club Championships in his yacht ‘Satie’ during the period 1998 to 2000.  Following this Bob purchased ‘Total Eclipse’ another Div 2 keelboat and went on to win the club Championships in that Class in two seasons from 2003 t0 2008.

Bob will also be remembered  for the contribution he made to leadership of the Club and service to its members. He served on the General Committee for 4 seasons from 1974 to 2000, was Rear Commodore for two seasons from 1975 to 1977, and then after a break he returned in 2000 to hold the position of Vice Commodore for two seasons followed by Commodore for a further two seasons from 2002.  It was during 2000 that Bob stepped in to run the Club’s office for a period on the resignation of the then manager.

During the time that he was Commodore the Club successfully hosted the World 420 Championships and a number of State Championships   He  led the Club’s 2nd attempt at creating a Safe Harbour at Mornington following the wish of the majority of members.   Then in 2003 when Grant Wharington’s ‘Wild Thing’ won line honours in the Sydney to Hobart race Bob and his Committee organised a welcome home night for the victorious crew; one of the largest and happiest functions held by the Club.

Bob was ably assisted by his wife Marg during his period of service and in recognition they were elected as Life Members of the Club in 2008.  Bob and Marg's daughter Michelle is an active current sailing member of the Club owning ‘Bald Eagle’.

Bob was also an active TAG team member and contributed significantly to the recent downstairs renovation and eastern wall replacement.

The whole family would like to particularly thank his MYC sailing friends, the TAG team, past commodores group and office who have continued to ask how he was keeping these last few months and to send him their well wishes.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Marg, Elizabeth, Michelle and family at this sad time.
