We are sad to advise that Bob Armstrong passed away peacefully the morning of Monday 13th May after his long fight against leukemia.
A member since 1969, he made an outstanding contribution over a long period, seeing many changes. He was a sailor with exceptional skills and his sailing results over nearly 30 years demonstrate that.
In the Flying Fifteen class he won 5 Club Championships in his boat ‘Emma’ over the period 1973 to 1984 and during his time in the Class he was 2nd in one 1976/77 State Title and 5th in another.
Graduating to the s80 Class when this Div 2 keelboat was introduced to the Club he won 2 Div 2 Club Championships in his yacht ‘Satie’ during the period 1998 to 2000. Following this Bob purchased ‘Total Eclipse’ another Div 2 keelboat and went on to win the club Championships in that Class in two seasons from 2003 t0 2008.
Bob will also be remembered for the contribution he made to leadership of the Club and service to its members. He served on the General Committee for 4 seasons from 1974 to 2000, was Rear Commodore for two seasons from 1975 to 1977, and then after a break he returned in 2000 to hold the position of Vice Commodore for two seasons followed by Commodore for a further two seasons from 2002. It was during 2000 that Bob stepped in to run the Club’s office for a period on the resignation of the then manager.
During the time that he was Commodore the Club successfully hosted the World 420 Championships and a number of State Championships He led the Club’s 2nd attempt at creating a Safe Harbour at Mornington following the wish of the majority of members. Then in 2003 when Grant Wharington’s ‘Wild Thing’ won line honours in the Sydney to Hobart race Bob and his Committee organised a welcome home night for the victorious crew; one of the largest and happiest functions held by the Club.
Bob was ably assisted by his wife Marg during his period of service and in recognition they were elected as Life Members of the Club in 2008. Bob and Marg's daughter Michelle is an active current sailing member of the Club owning ‘Bald Eagle’.
Bob was also an active TAG team member and contributed significantly to the recent downstairs renovation and eastern wall replacement.
The whole family would like to particularly thank his MYC sailing friends, the TAG team, past commodores group and office who have continued to ask how he was keeping these last few months and to send him their well wishes.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Marg, Elizabeth, Michelle and family at this sad time.
