Team MYC was out in force at Sail Peninsula and MYC boats and crew were well represented across the divisions and the results.
 
MYC boats competing included Apache, Black Jack, Endless Advice, Ginan, Himalayan Women, Javelin, Mixed Nuts, Moonshadow, Morning Mist, Panther, Remedy, Rush, Summers Lease, Trim, Tub Thumper, Unprecedented, Y Knot & Zippier.
 
It was great to see Morning Mist out competing in her first regatta.
 
Summarising the MYC boats that placed in the overalls:

• Endless Advice – 1st CBH, 2nd EHC Div 2
  
• Himalayan Women – 2nd CBH Div 2
• Rush – 1st Sports Boats

There were lots of MYC boats and crews racing, Rob Harrison did very well and won trailables overall!

On Sunday MYC won the AMS Teams Challenge race, which is the first time that MYC has won this trophy.  See below history of clubs winning the AMS Teams Challenge.  

The AMS Teams Challenge is calculated from the scores of the top 3 performing boats in AMS in Div 1 from each club for the Sunday Margaret Crittenden Memorial Challenge race.
The top three performing boats under AMS from MYC were:

• Ginan (1st place),
  
• Rush (4th place),
  
• Javelin (5th place).

MYC youth sailing on Rush (Jack Eickmeyer, Lachie Weber) and Ginan (Jack Vermeer) helped win this trophy.

ORCV Overview
We conduct a regular, on-water practical tour of the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. The ‘pincers’ of the two peninsulas are known collectively as The Heads and comprise of Point Lonsdale in the West and Point Nepean in the East. The Rip is the passage of water between these two points.

During the ORCV Rip Tour, very experienced offshore navigators and yachtsmen provide expert commentary. This makes for an informative and enjoyable day for all yachties and their families. Since it's beginning, the Rip Tour has grown in popularity with all manner of boaties, fishermen, historians, beach walkers, surfers and holiday makers alike, so come along and get set to enjoy a memorable day out on Port Phillip Bay. Please also remember that this is an on-water, outdoor activity that is subject to weather conditions and sometimes postponements, so your co-operation and understanding is very much appreciated.

‘The Rip’ is the narrow entrance to Port Phillip Bay and the only access for shipping to the ports of both Melbourne and Geelong. More than 4,000 commercial vessels transit this gateway annually, where underwater reefs limit the navigable entrance to just 0.6 of a nautical mile.
This narrow entrance acts to restrict the tidal flow within the Bay, which holds some 25km3 of water therein and sets up a difference in the relative water levels between Port Phillip Bay and the Bass Strait. Consequently, the tides can run very fast in both directions and when you add some of the strong winds the area is famous for, it all brings about some very interesting and precarious conditions, where the tide can be up to six knots and the water can stack up to over a metre and sometimes three!
The Heads are governed by the Port of Melbourne from Point Lonsdale Light, more correctly known as Point Lonsdale Signal Station or Lonsdale VTS (VTS = Vessel Traffic Service). They close the Heads when conditions are unsuitable.

Outcomes
To provide for well planned and executed transits of Port Phillip’s Heads, with an emphasis on doing so in low-powered vessels (like yachts) and provide information to participants on the numerous navigational aids and strict procedures required for safe passages through.
• Knowledge of safety procedures
• Identification of navigational aids
• Familiarisation of the leads and use of safe water channels
• Understanding radio protocols
• Awareness of expected inbound and outbound traffic and obligations
• Confidence in traversing The Rip either during day or night with identification of leads and tidal flow
• Weather conditions and their effect on tidal streams

Rip Tour Content
This course begins when the ORCV vessel steams from Sorrento Pier to collect the other passengers from Queenscliff, where there will be commentary on certain key elements of the area. Once the other passengers have boarded, the instruction by experienced offshore navigators and yachtsmen will begin. This covers:
• Underwater topography
• Points of interest
• Major channel beacons, marks and navigational aids
• Traffic data and radio protocols
• Queenscliff lead lights and shipping channels
• Tides and tide signals
• Identification of safe conditions and/or dangers
• How to perform a correct and safe passage in both directions
• Pertinent historical facts and points of interest
From the instruction, you will learn about patterns in tidal flow, how to set up for safe transits of the Rip and experience the correct channel protocols in use. Favourable conditions will either be observed or described depending on the day, as well as learning how to anticipate and therefore avoid, dangerous situations.
You will also traverse the leads under Shortland Bluff and depending on tide and traffic, there may be the opportunity to venture seawards to view the effects of ‘The Rip’ before returning to disembark at your nominated port.
During the course, all participants will receive a copy of ORCV’s Rip Guide.

Qualifications
The ORCV requires the sailing master of any yacht entering an ORCV race for the first time to have demonstrated an understanding of navigation protocol at Port Phillip Heads, either from experience within the last six months or by completing this course.

Course Registration Information
This course is weather dependant and requires a minimum number of participants to go ahead.  If unsuitable conditions are forecast, registered participants will be notified by telephone on the morning of the scheduled tour.
Bookings are essential, as there is a limit on the number of passengers the vessel can take.
We require one registration for each person accompanying you, as this also allows us to inform all of you if there is a postponement due to weather or the like.
For your convenience, you can board from either side of the Bay in Sorrento or Queenscliff. Click here for a map of both boarding locations. You must nominate which Boarding Location you would like to embark/disembark from when you register. The ORCV vessel will be departing on time, so please ensure you are ready to go, ahead of schedule.
Once you have boarded, you should NOT disembark until after the tour is completed and only disembark at the scheduled times in Sorrento and Queenscliff.  Toilets and cafeteria are located onboard for your convenience.  Timing of the tour is critical including scheduled arrival at the Rip near Slack Water.  The ORCV will not be responsible for anyone who is not onboard by the scheduled departure times.
What to Bring• Weather appropriate clothing including non-slip footwear
• Snacks and water
• Binoculars, notepads, Dictaphones and cameras are optional at your discretion
• Life jackets will be available on board


Course PresentersVery experienced ORCV offshore navigators and yachtsmen will provide not only commentary, and will also highlight points of interest, provide aide-mémoires and include any pertinent historical facts or points.

WOW! What a weekend, I think that all of you that came down to the club would agree that MYC runs Regatta's very well!  It is all thanks to TEAM work - a huge thank you to EVERYONE that volunteered, you slotted into your role & together put on a great Regatta!  We literally  couldn't have done this without you! A special thanks to those of you working behind the scenes during the run up of the event - many hours were put in.
Well done to all of our sailors that participated in the windy weather and thank you to our Green and Intermediate sailors who participated in alternative games and sailing fun whilst the wind was too strong.  HUGE thank you to our sponsor, Mel from Town Planning & Co. it is always lovely to have your fun energy here at MYC!

It’s time to catch up with developments around the Club and forthcoming events. 

The Schnapper Point Regatta this past weekend enabled us to witness the skills of young people having fun and further developing their sailing journey in very trying conditions. Thank you to all on water race and land based supporters ensuring the safety and welfare of competitors and the entourage following them. Well done everyone. 

Project Hurricane is coming to an end with the extended female change room becoming operational and cladding of the shower cubicles soon. The non slip floors are not satisfactory and will be fixed over winter. 

The automatic back gates and fob system are now in place tightening up security. Make arrangements to swap over your key for a fob with the office. Key locks will be disabled by the end of February. 

Many people have commented highly favorably about the Club storyboard.  This really sets off the new downstairs area. Thank you  to Stuart Gooley and Ben Jones for putting this together. 

Funding is starting to come together for the renewal and relocation of our crane with improvements to Maas Landing. This will be our priority project over winter dependent on Council support which appears to be favorable. Sorry we can’t push them from following their due processes any faster to enable engineering work to be undertaken.  

Council have recently been firming up arrangements to undertake the dredging of the area adjacent to the Club’s ramp and slipway together with the public boat ramp. We trust this will be finished in time for slipping scheduled for the 6th of May. Otherwise contingency arrangements will be put in place. 

Parks Vic have finally been able to appoint a Project Manager to undertake the planning and re-development of  the Fishermans Jetty. A heritage consultant has been engaged and expressions of interest have gone out for a planning consultant. While the progress appears glacial, we expect consultation with the Club will commence in April.  We have a fair handle on what the new pier infrastructure is likely to look like in terms of fairways for commercial craft and the future of the mooring grid. 

Preliminary  thinking is going into expanding our upstairs toilets, making better use of space on the back deck and improving the amenity on the front deck. Standby for announcements on Project Typhoon. This work is likely to be staged in conjunction with the renewal of  the Rocks lease.  In the meantime we have freshened up the ladies and men's toilets with a coat of paint.

The MYC Foundation lunch on the 3rd of March is a sell out and an important funding tool to support Club improvements.

We will be holding an appreciation dinner for our Sailability volunteers on Wednesday the 29th of March to mark the end of their season.  

MYC will host the return of the Victory Cup golf tournament amongst bayside yacht clubs at Rosebud Country Club on Thursday the 6th of April. Bookings through Trybooking to be announced. 

The Club will be holding an Appreciation and Presentation Dinner on Saturday the 6th of May to coincide with the end of season for keel and trailer yachts. We are planning a separate function for Off the Beach boats. More information on both events will follow shortly. 

Finally the Board finds it necessary to remind all members about our Code of Conduct which is published below. We are all busy people and take no pleasure in having to arbitrate or pull into line poor behaviour between members and/or interactions with the public. Take sometime to think carefully before reacting to an issue upsetting you. Exercise tolerance.

Mornington Yacht Club is one of the premier yacht clubs in Victoria and as such enjoys a reputation around the nation.

Membership of MYC is a privilege and carries with it a responsibility to uphold our reputation at every opportunity and not to engage in conduct that brings the Club and other members into disrepute or is contrary to the Constitution and By-Laws of MYC.

There are many stakeholders in Mornington Yacht Club and members and visitors of MYC have a duty to ensure that they cause no adverse impact on any of these stakeholders as a result of their actions at MYC or in the wider environment.

Members and visitors must behave in a manner that facilitates, enhances and ensures the:

1. Reputation and standing of MYC;
2. Amenity of other members of MYC;
3. Health, safety and comfort of staff employed at MYC;
4. Enjoyment of visitors to MYC; and
5. Physical property and facilities provided by MYC.

Members and visitors shall not engage in conduct that:

1. Breaches accepted standards of public behaviour;
2. Jeopardises the health and safety of members, staff and visitors;
3. Causes offence to members, staff and visitors;
4. Lessens the amenity and enjoyment of members, staff and visitors;
5. Damages, destroys or lessens the value of MYC assets; or
6. Damages, destroys or lessens the value of property owned by other Club members.

Any member bringing the Club into disrepute may be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with the MYC Constitution.

Any visitor breaching this code may be asked to leave the premises. Any visitor who does not recognize or demonstrate an ongoing understanding of this code of conduct will be asked to stay away indefinitely.
