Over the weekend we hosted the Victorian Junior Carnival and Schnapper Point Regatta incorporating the 29er States and a selection event for the Optimist state team. Over 120 boats and 142 sailors with a few extra class association sailors who came along to help. Team MYC did a fantastic job, and have had numerous thank yous and compliments. The weather wasn’t kind but we made the most of it.

This sort of event totally relies on its volunteers. A huge thank you to everyone. As there were close to 100, I can’t name them all here. A special mention though to the team leaders who took on areas and had them covered. Then there those that I called the “rocks” those dependable helpers that just keep on going all weekend to the very end of jobs.

In the Lasers MYC took out 1,2 and 3 (Rhett Gowans, Jack Eickmeyer and Lachie Weber) which is a nice lead up to Laser Radial Worlds next weekend. No, it’s not quietening down

In the final event of the 29er States, Zac Hayes was first, and Lily & Matilda Richardson 2nd, and obviously first girls.

Miles Levenspiel 2nd in Opti Intermediate. James Jackson 2nd in 420s.

Now just quietly down in the Green fleet on Saturday we only have participation medals. My delight is seeing the greenies that just seem one day to “get it”. Well done to Harry Rae and Josh Bacon, watch out they are learning quick.

Saturday Race Report 15th February

I promise not to lay the nostalgia on as heavily as last week, but it is tempting. The Queenscliff race has so many stories worth telling. I remember the race when Ken Woods put his boat up on the beach at Queenscliff and how the harbour has changed from a rustic fishing port to a flashy marina with showers and fluffy towels supplied. Thankfully Queenscliff hasn’t changed too much, the fisherman’s cottages are always a joy to walk past on your way to post race refreshments. The bar on the top of the tower at the Vue Grand is also a tradition, although the stairs can be a cardiovascular challenge on the way up and for some, a coordination challenge on the way down later in the evening.

I think we all knew what to expect on a Saturday morning in mid-February. That’s right, grey skies, rain and 15 – 20 knots of wind. It has really been a strange summer. A fleet of 15 boats gathered on the start line for the annual Queenscliff destination race (AKA Queensland race). Javelin was off to a quick lead in the Keelboat division and Himalayen Women lead the trailables to the East Cardinal mark. There was an early retirement from Magic Pudding . Once at the East Cardinal mark boats were met with a  broad reach in vigorous winds that took the fleet towards the West Channel and then things started to get interesting. Hamalayen Women blew apart their rudder box and returned to Mornington, contemplating what could have been. Meanwhile a fresh wind and a favourable tide was pushing the fleet quickly towards the Pope’s Eye marker. The competitive spirits in the keel boat fleet must have  been running high as skippers pushed their boats outside the channel and eventually onto the sand. First it was TRIM and then Seduction. Fortunately, TRIM was able to raise their keel and continue, however Seduction was stuck hard in the sand and was a late arrival into Queenscliff. Well done to Javelin leading the fleet to the finish line. Those boats that returned home had a quick trip back to Mornington. Those that headed into Queenscliff shared some great company and tall stories. The trip back on Sunday is a report in itself, maybe another day.

Friday Race Report 7 February
 
The night race has been a feature of the MYC sailing program for a long time.  The race was often held on Good Friday and was always well supported. There were some great boats sailing at Mornington in the ‘70s and I can remember being amazed that big boats like Mark Twain and Nike sailed the race one year in appalling conditions. I stayed home that year, however I seem to remember most Easter Night Races were sailed in fairly calm conditions. Night races in those days took you all over the bay often to a number of marks around the northern parts of the bay before heading south to the West Channel Pile and then further south before heading home. I remember one year we were convinced we had located a mark only to be surprised when the mark proceeded to move, and we discovered we were looking at a train pulling out of Middle Brighton station. Many night races finished around dawn, and on at least one occasion I can remember finishing in the early afternoon.  It’s amazing what a different world we lived in during the 1970s. One Good Friday I headed down to the Club with a mate called Pat Mulquinney. Without telling our parents we proceeded to join the crew of a boat sailing the night race. Morning came and the race was completed and then after some breakfast at Pat’s place I rang Mum to come and pick me up. Of course, being the 1970s no questions were asked. What were my parents thinking! Times have sure changed, and maybe I was lucky to have experienced a much more innocent world.

Last Friday, the night race started with a smokey backdrop and light conditions. This made for a beautiful sunset and the eerie spectacle of boats quickly disappearing from sight into the mist.  The 9 boat fleet, including 5 trailables and a visitor from SBSC headed under spinnaker to the East Cardinal marker. The stern chaser start made for a fun drag race to the first mark with all boats rounding within 20 minutes of each other. A few navigational errors caused pain for some Division 3 boats before they headed for home in a freshening easterly with Zip in the lead. The big boats headed onto Indented Head and racing proved to be incredibly tight with less than a minute separating the leading Division1 boats across the finishing line.  Well done to the crew of Endless Advice for taking CBH honours against the amazing crew of Zip. It takes a great sail to pip those guys! Well done also Shining Sea for wining the match race with Javelin across the Bay.

Mornington Foot Clinic was established 30 years ago and has expanded to include Podiatrists Marie Butler, Dianne Keating, Thomas McKenzie, Sam Davies, Harminder Rayat, Amber McKenzie and Michelle Luscombe. Rule 46 of the Racing Rules of Sailing currently has a prescription that after three races, all crew of any race shall be a club member; and that Australian Sailing was reviewing the requirement.

From 1 January 2021 the Australian Sailing prescription to the rule will be amended to require that all crew of any race are members of an affiliated club; and also registered with Australian Sailing- regardless of the number of races they have competed in.

When publishing the Racing Rules of Sailing in 2016, Australian Sailing informed clubs (in the rule itself) to note that it was reviewing these requirements and to expect changes to be made requiring that all crew of any race to be members of an affiliated club and registered with Australian Sailing.

Since that time Australian Sailing has introduced revSport has introduced a database solution (revSPORT) and SailPass has been rolled out nationally and enthusiastically taken up by many clubs. The latter provides flexibility for clubs to make competitors members for any suitably appropriate terms. Introductory membership under SailPass is membership of a club and provides for registration of the crew with Australian Sailing.

The affiliation structure for Clubs has been harmonised nationally. There is no longer a “capitation fee”; and the number of members is not the sole determining factor of a clubs affiliation fee.

This is to say:

1. Advance notice of the change (now approved) has been published for the past four years, and
2. The systems used for club membership and registration with Australian Sailing are ready for the change, and
3. This is not a revenue raising exercise. Clubs’ affiliation fees are not impacted, and
4. Alternative solutions (ie Crew Club in NSW) will be discontinued.

Competitors’ membership of clubs and registration with Australian Sailing has for a long time been a major strategic priority for the sport of sailing. The need for competitors to be members of clubs and registered with Australian Sailing is connected to helping clubs maintain their strength and sustainability, manage their liability risk, and provide personal insurance protection.

The only change in the rule is that rather than crew having the three ‘free races’, they now have to be members for all races. We know that compliance with the rule requiring club membership is rarely a problem in off the beach racing or top-level keelboat events. The challenges with application of the rule in other segments has always been there and unfortunately remains unchanged unless clubs actively promote membership.

Saturday Race Report – February 1, 2020

Almost unbearable heat and humidity greeted us on Saturday morning after baking us with drying 43C heat on Friday.  How could it get any worse ? Heat, wind, rain, thunderstorms and a severe weather warning don’t augur well for a perfect days sailing, but that was the forecast. Surprisingly 9 determined boats and crew  decided to turn out for the start and were rewarded with a steady wind  (I am keeping this positive) and a yes there was a bit of rain, well quite a bit of rain to be truthful.Australians are pretty good at coming up with idioms to describe most things and in particular the weather. Anyone who knew my father Kevin would remember he was famous for his sayings. He had one for every occasion. So, after all the rain we had during Saturday’s race I stated to think what phrase Dad would have used to describe the weather. Curiously I couldn’t recall anything straight away and went to best MYC source of Australian idioms, namely Paul Dynes. It may come as no surprise that most of Paul’s suggestions were, well, let’s say a bit “fruity” for use in the Tattler (happy to pass them on privately).

Luckily, I did recall one that Dad used occasionally, so here goes. It was raining so hard on Saturday that the animals were starting to pair up.

Well  done to all the wet shags that gathered on the deck next door to the Rocks post-race. It will take a while to dry out our boats and our souls.
