Sports Persons' Mental Health & Wellbeing

The Mental Health Foundation Australia cordially invites you to the Sportspersons' Mental Health Symposium on:

When: October 16, 2020, 10:00am – 2:00pm
Where: Brisbane Convention Centre, Glenelg St, South Brisbane QLD 4101

Mental health has been unaddressed in the Australian sporting landscape for a long time, but several athletes have recently opened up about their battles with depression and anxiety, also revealed their struggles with mental health and dealing with their schedules of relentless training, competition and evaluation.

With the recent outbreak of mental health issues in players, the Foundation is organising a National Symposium on Sportspersons' Mental Health to raise awareness about mental health and wellbeing among players, coaches, sports associations and to have a discussion on the status of support services available to them.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact staff at projectadmin@mhfa.org.au or call us on P: (03) 9826 1422

We hope you can join us at the event!

Please confirm your attendance, by registering via this link:

  • Donations received of $26,435, a 74% increase on the previous year.
  • Expenditure on projects which have been approved by the Australian Sports Foundation for the benefit of the Club totaled $27,002 an increase of 56% over the previous year.
  • 37 new members joined the Foundation, an increase of 65% over the previous year.
  • Distributions since the forming of the Foundation four years ago now total $109,948.
The original agreed projects  are:
  • To develop facilities and to provide training of individuals in the sport of sailing.  Previously the Foundation provided six Pacer dinghies to the Club and provided training vouchers to non members  who were interested in taking up the sport.  In the current year $1,061 was spent on the upkeep of these dinghies.
  • To provide funding that will enable more experienced sailors to fulfill their ambitions by competing  at regional, interstate , national, and international regattas.  Each year the Foundation has granted Elite Sailing Grants to Club members but unfortunately due to the onset of Covid 19 none of our members were able to travel internationally to compete on the World stage and as a result no grants were made.  The Trustees believe that these grants are important and look forward to recommencing this program next year.
  • To raise funds to support the Club's Sailability programs which provides sailing experiences for disabled individuals.  No funding for this objective was required this year however assistance was provided for the replacement of the Club lift which is used by Sailability as well as Club members. The Foundation donated $11,100 to the Club as a part of the funds needed to replace the lift.

In addition to the original projects several new ones have been added during the year as follows:
  • A campaign was launched to provide funds for the repair and replacement of Club rescue boats and the upgrading of Club sailing infrastructure.  Donations of $10,470 have been received to date.  This campaign is ongoing and no amounts have been spent to date.
  •  Funds have been sought during the year for essential repairs to be undertaken on the Club's slipway.  To date $14,618 has been spent enabling the slip to be restored to safe working order.
  • Recently the Club's Training and Development Group  announced plans to launch a new junior and youth training program and to provide the facilities necessary to offer this program a number of Opti dinghies need to be acquired by the Club.  The program was launched in June and by year end $1,276 had been raised with the bulk of the donations expected in the new year.

The Foundation is an unincorporated entity governed by a Charter drawn  up and adopted by the Committee of the Mornington Yacht Club.  The Foundation offers individuals the opportunity to make tax deductible donations to specific projects.   The Foundation is required to provide acquittal reports to the ASF documenting the expenditure of funds on these approved projects.

In addition the Foundation is able to accept donations made directly to it where no tax deduction is sought .

The activities of the Foundation are governed by a Board of Trustees;
Stuart Gooley (Chairman)
Ray Harvey
Noel Heyes
Bret Levenspiel.

The Foundation holds regular meetings independently of the Club Board and operates its own Bank account.  Reports are provided to the Club Board on the Foundation's activities.  It is our overriding objective to work collaboratively with the Board to provide financial support for projects agreed to by the Foundation.

The Trustees are pleased with the progress that the Foundation has made during the year given the difficulties arising from the Covid 19 outbreak which has curtailed our activities since March.  As a result of this outbreak the Foundation's fund raising  Business lunch planned for 3 April at which Club member and international around the world sailor Sophie Ciszek was to be the guest speaker had to be cancelled.  At the time of the cancellation ticket sales were strong and an interesting collection of raffle prizes had been arranged.  We would like to thank all sponsors who agreed so generously to assist with this event and to the organising group our appreciation for their efforts.  We look forward to resurrecting  this important fund raising event when conditions allow.

Finally it is encouraging to the Trustees that the Foundation continues to gain traction within the Club with 94 contibutors at year end.  We recognise that we are in a period of serious financial difficulty which may continue for some time however by continuing to expand our base and encouraging donations of any amount from members we will be able to  materially assist the Club in building and maintaining the  operations that will benefit all members.

MYC Stage Three COVID-19 Update

8/7/2020

Dear members,

With the sad news of the reintroduction of restrictions which includes the Mornington Peninsula as it stands today, please see below for Australian Sailing's interpretation of the communicated restrictions.  There is a meeting being held tomorrow with Sport and Recreations so if there are any changes we will update you afterwards.

  • All club training and organised sailing must stop as of 11.59pm tonight (Wednesday 8 July)
  • Recreational boating my continue as long as it is with members of your household, or with one person from outside your household. However, the 1.5 meter social distancing rule must be adhered to at all times and there is to be NO sharing of equipment. So this now rules out all double handed dinghy sailing until further notice.
  • Informal training is NOT allowed. It is not seen as recreational boating.
  • Club facilities (meeting rooms, changing rooms, toilets, cafes, restaurants, canteens etc) should be closed, except for the delivery of takeaway meals and drinks.
For current information on these restrictions please click here.

For your information, some key points from the DHHS website for sailing clubs: Community sport training and competition cannot occur within the Melbourne metropolitan area or the Shire of Mitchell. If you live in this area you cannot participate in community sport elsewhere.
  • Outdoor sport facilities will be closed, except for facilities where people can exercise with no more than one other person or members of your household while maintaining 1.5 metres distance. Equipment should not be shared, and communal facilities cannot open. Personal training outdoors can occur but with a limit of two participants plus the instructor.
  • Restaurants and cafes can open to serve takeaway and home delivery only.

The office will still be answering calls and emails so please contact us if you have any questions or concerns,

Look after yourselves and we will keep you updated as soon as we hear.

Regards
Greg Martin
