Little to no wind challenged our sailors this Sunday.... (see photos). We had two new green fleet debuts, Milly Grover and Oscar Lee! So great to see them race professionally in such difficult conditions. All started and completed both races with a few cool off swims in between. Thanks to Rod Evenden for assisting Mel with the starts, it is great to have many of the parents help out…makes for an easy fun day. Cheers, Bret Results: Race 1
Hastings Yacht Club Members started to build a 40 ft steel boat many years ago, but never completed the task and are selling some of the gear purchased for this project. Click here for more info or see advert on the MYC downstairs members information board at the club Hot Hot Hot! Carrying the Optis over the hot sand to the water was worth it! All the kids were keen to muck about in the bay and cool off (see photos). The wind picked up with off shore breezes from a few directions providing the team some fun sailing. From the shore it looked like every chance to capsize was taken. Hearing the kids laughing together on the water was gold. The cool change came in which was delightful for chatting on the beach with friends and a sausage. A water melon was murdered and modeled into a helmet (great craftsmanship Carolyn) …hope you will be wearing it at the Junior Carnival Ethan. Our email list keeps growing with more joining in. It was great to see Jack and Liam Vermeer and Max Prosser turn up. Hope to see you again at the next Friday Fun session (2 February 2018). Don’t forget to book on our website. Next Friday, 26 January – Australia Day Parade Would you like to join in on the MYC Float at the Australia Day Parade? We will be meeting at MYC at 3:00pm on Friday, 26 January to prepare the float and brief all. If you can please wear the yacht club colours or something nautical that would be great. Plan is to leave MYC at 3:45pm to arrive at Barkly Street no later than 4:15pm (This time was stipulated by the event organisers as the parade will be starting at 4:45 sharp). If you wish to go directly to our starting position at 4:15pm our float should be on Barkly Street (midway between Waterloo Place and Empire Street). We are position 10 in the parade, behind the Mornington Life Saving Club if that helps. All are welcome and we are looking forward to seeing you. Junior Carnival – Saturday 10th February I will be sending out another email about this over the weekend. Some parents have indicated they would like to help and I am putting together a list of things we can do to assist. Cheers Bret Vice Commodore Bookings Now Open

Kids on Keelboats was a little more challenging this year in 20-25 knots leading to a few retirements. Great to see some pre Tackers grandkids out there, as well as the youth steering some big boats. One owner was heard to say - “don’t do too good a job steering, you’ll make me look bad” Of all comers Apache took out Div 1, Morning Light without kids won Div 2 and Beau Brummell Div 3. By pairing up the kids there were more spots than kids, but thank you again for making it happen. Cam provided movie tickets for the boats steered by kids. Unfortunately 2 of these boats retired, but of those that finished, Seduction took the honours with Jack Eickmeyer and Lachie Weber, from Phoenix with Kate James and Sophie McKenzie. Was great to see the Saturday and Sunday aspects to the club getting to know each other better. On average we have some 25+ people using this program each sailing day. We have seven yachts and on occasion we find we can only get five on the water being short on sailors. If you feel you would like to get involved in our program and join our friendly team. Please contact either: Noel Heyes 0418 686 571 or Graeme Lyell 0411 514 781 - We would love to hear from you! With the demise of the popular Lidgett Trophy, many have discussed a possible successor. At the same time many have aspired to improve our conversion from Tackers, and other Learn to Sail programs, into life long sailing. Australian Sailing has specifically asked Mornington Yacht Club to start off, establishing a Junior Carnival to meet these aims. The key as we envisage it, with these young sailors, is social and fun. They have asked us, partly due to our success with the Optis in the past, plus our focus on fun and participation as seen with Friday Fun. We need your support for this new carnival in its infancy. The Lidgett Trophy deserved respect and sentiment. Our aim is to establish something that can continue for many more years for the benefit of all. This carnival though will be focused on just the more junior sailors, so different from the Lidgett. By focusing on the more junior ones it presents some challenges. So to give you an idea of our intentions:
So we need your help. Big boats are racing to Hobson’s Bay that weekend. We have brought the start time earlier to 9 am to try and free up the yard. It would be great if as many TYs as possible could stay in the water after Thursday night’s race. On Sunday it is only the older kids sailing Schnapper Point sailing. We will need some co-operation both ways with yard Sunday afternoon and some marshals to help it go smoothly. Helpers Saturday morning for off loading arriving boats would also be great. Of course the BBQ will run as usual, but they will need assistance, and we need some sandwich makers. This is where the fundraising happens. Our biggest challenge is on the Friday and Monday moving plastic colorful Optis around the city and peninsula. Then there is the usual race management, and safety boats. This is all about promoting the future of our sport, Please let us know if you can help Andrew Weber [email protected] The MYC kids have been preparing a float for the Australia Day Parade on Main Street, Mornington.
