ORCV Bass Strait Sprint Sees GINAN Sail to Victory

28/11/2023

PRESS RELEASE 27 November 2023

ORCV Bass Strait Sprint Sees GINAN Sail to Victory

The second West Offshore Products Coastal Sprint race sailed in light, and tricky conditions in Bass Strait saw Nigel Jones GINAN lead the way and come away the victor. Jones commented, “conditions were variable; we were preparing for storms yet applying sunscreen”.

Skippers and crews were up at sunrise in preparation for the early Queenscliff start with the dawn sky, mesmerising shades of blue. Due to anticipated light winds, the course was shortened to the eastern course; however, this did little to dampen the spirits of seasoned sailors and eager newcomers.

A light north-westerly at the start, allowed for a kite run to the first mark before a tight reach toward Cape Schanck. With glass-like conditions on the water and variable wind, the race fleet slowed to a mere knot, testing patience and prompting some early retirements and playful antics among the crews. True to the spirit of sailing, the wind eventually picked up.

GINAN, a J111 with an impressive offshore racing record, led the fleet for most of the race to take line honours and win both AMS and ORC divisions.

Nigel commented after the race that he was surprised by the weather conditions and  e was “unsure how the low-pressure system would play out, starting with the A2 spinnaker and then alternating between the A1.5 and Code 0 spinnaker ten times throughout the race!" While Nigel was navigating today, he was complimentary of Stuart Bloom’s helming and the overall crew effort, noting they are now well-versed together, having done many ocean races this year and understanding GINAN’s capabilities. He was also complimentary of Timothy Olding’s Summit 35 VERTIGO’s race, noting they kept them on their toes.

Since launching its Category 3 event in 2019, the Coastal Sprint Series, explicitly aimed at helping crews move into ocean racing, the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV) is pleased with its support for growing offshore fleets in Victoria.

This race welcomed new entrants Michael Vandertop’s Hanse 325 PZAZZ, Matthew Ross’s Sydney 32 RAKU, and Rod Gunther’s Nelson Marek designed QUEST.

ORCV Commodore Cyrus Allen acknowledged, “We believe our future, and that of offshore yachting in Victoria, relies on being innovative and helping grow skippers and crews from Cat 3 to offshore racing. That equates to us investing in it.”

The third and final Coastal Sprint is scheduled for 20 April 2024.

24/11/2023

Most of you by now would have heard about the "Visitor Paid Parking Pilot" happening around the Schnapper Point Foreshore area and seen the signage which is now up.  Please refer to the map below Orange = 4P, Red = 2P and Yellow = no time limit for ePermit holders.  This will be between the hours of 8am to 8pm every day commencing 1 December 23.

We have had several meetings with the Shire, and some good and not so good news has come out of this.

The good news is that ALL MYC Club Members will be able to park FREE of charge, including those that do not live in the Mornington Shire.

PLEASE NOTE:
  • All residents and club members outside of the Mornington Shire NEED to apply for an ePermit.
  • Non Mornington Shire residents need to contact the club for evidence of your membership which will need to be provided when you apply for the permit.
The not so good news is that the 4P limit around the club boundary is not able to be extended as we had hoped to 6P (at this stage).     What this means;

Thursday Night Sailing Parking
  • If you park from 4pm onwards in a 4P spot you will be able to stay all evening without having to move / receiving a fine.
Saturday and Sunday Sailing
Some area's that currently allow longer than 4 hours close to the club are:
  • Flinders Drive - refer to the Yellow area on the below map.  You will still be required to have a Resident / Club ePermit, but there will be no time limit.
  • The Esplanade opposite the Royal Hotel / outside the bowls club up to the start of Flinders Drive.
  • The Esplanade after the small carpark which is at the top of Schnapper Point Drive.
  • Vancouver St Car Park - opposite the library
  • Residential side streets
We have requested for a drop off/ pick up grace period to cover those wanting to drop off people/equipment before exiting to longer term parking areas.  I am just awaiting confirmation from the Shire on how long this will be.

VALE | Don Jones

23/11/2023

Picture
Our heartfelt condolences to Judy, Bronwyn, Nigel and family on the passing of Don.

Don will be very sadly missed, he was a member of Mornington Yacht Club for over 50 years, Honorary Life Member, was on the Committee for one year before becoming Rear Commodore for five years, Club Captain for one year and was Honorary Secretary for five years.

Don had a lifelong passion for sailing and made an amazing contribution to MYC and the sport of sailing.  He was a brilliant engineer, who loved the science of sailing and developed a unique skill in designing race yachts as a hobby.  Don’s yacht designs were always very progressive, and he was ahead of his time.  Don had a series of yachts at Mornington that he designed and successfully campaigned Cadibarra 5, 6, 7 and 8.  Don was always constantly improving and evolving the Cadibarra’s with hulls being extended, new keels, rudders, rigs and sail plans to make them go faster.  Cadibarra 7 and 8 were successfully compaigned offshore including competing in numerous Sydney to Hobart and Melbourne to Hobart races.  As a testament to Don’s designs and their structural integrity Cadibarra 7 was the only boat to finish the gale swept 1999 Melbourne to Hobart Race.

During his retirement Don applied his passion and expertise to designing and engineering numerous yachts including the 100 footer Skandia Wild Thing, which took line honors in the 2003 Sydney to Hobart Race and then he went on to design the Volvo 70 Brunel for the 2005/06 Volvo Ocean Race.

Don was a tremendously generous man who volunteered his time and passed on his knowledge freely and provided enormous opportunities for so many sailors over the years.  He was one of kind and will be greatly missed by the MYC and greater sailing community.

Fair winds and following seas.

The Celebration of Life will be held here at the Club on Wednesday 29th of November commencing 2pm.

Understanding and using your Crew Register and Crew Lists

13/11/2023

This season is the first year that submitting an electronic crew list for racing has been mandatory. We understand it may be a little confronting to start with, but, it's truly not that complicated - and we hope this explanation helps you on your way. This email will be sent to all boat admins and directed to the Thursday Twilight racing fleet as well as the Saturday racing fleet fleet. If you are competing in both events, expect a second identical email for this reason.

Understanding the SailSys 'Crew Register':
  • The Crew Register is a database of people that boat admins create for their boat and is simply a 'contact list' of those who may come sailing on the boat.
  • We've seen some users with 15 - 20 names on their Crew Register - a healthy list of people that the admins may choose from to sail on their boat in a race.
  • A Crew Register 'belongs' to a boat and is managed by a boat admin.
  • Build your Crew Register up by inviting crew along via email.
  • Also build your Crew Register up by having new crew scan your boat's QR Code prior to their first race on your boat.
  • If they have a SailSys account, they will be immediately add to your register.
  • If they don't, the invite will prompt them to create a SailSys account and then add them to the register once completed.
  • Consider it your very own database of possible crew for your boat. Nothing more.
*** Make sure you as an admin/owner/skipper of a boat are added to the Crew Register too.
Understanding the SailSys 'Crew List':

  • The Crew List is a record of every crew member on the boat (PoB) for every race - it's mandatory and it's all about safety.
  • It's fundamentally no different to the old system of walking upstairs to the Race Office, finding the sign on sheet, filling in all the names and numbers with a pen - the difference is it's paperless and you can do it incredibly easily from home or on your boat ANY TIME prior to racing - by phone or computer.
  • The Crew List must be created for every race by a boat's admin.
  • And even though you might be the boat admin or skipper, you MUST add yourself to the Crew List just like any other member of the crew.
  • The Crew List for every race must be an accurate record of who is on your boat when you leave shore for each race.
  • A completed Crew List fulfills part of your obligation under the Sailing Instructions in regard to Signing On for every race.
  • An incomplete Crew List will receive a scoring penalty.
...and don't forget it's mandatory and it's all about safety....
Understanding the boat's QR Code:

  • Each boat has a unique QR code and when scanned, will add crew to the Crew List for the next race and to the boat's Crew Register.
  • Your boat's QR code is your friend. It's ridiculously easy to use and will save everybody so much time.
  • A boat admin has access to the QR and we recommend it is printed and kept onboard.
  • Anybody can scan your QR and instantly join the next race and appear on the Crew List.
  • Also, anybody who scans it will automatically be added to the boat's Crew Register if not already on it.
  • Note: Crew who scan the QR will be added to the next scheduled race based on the time of day the QR is scanned.
  • Example: The scheduled Start time for next Thursday is 17:30hrs - so crew who scan the QR prior to this time (i.e. today, tomorrow or 17:29hrs on Thursday) will be added to that race. If the QR is scanned after the scheduled start time for next Thursday (17:30hrs), crew will be added to the following scheduled' race - which is a week later. Of course this can be modified via the Crew List management area in your account but don't let your late crew additions to a race catch you out by being in next weeks list!
A day in the life - Populating a Crew List:
Assuming you have a list of names in your crew register, a boat admin must:
  • Go to their account
  • Select a race for the boat and by using the drop down menu available for that race, add EVERY crew member prior to racing.
  • Complete your crew list within the time constraints set-out in SI Clause 1.3.7.1(a)
  • *Hint: there is an option when building the Crew List to select 'Last Race Crew' to make things quicker for you which will add the submitted crew list from your last race in that series - and that list may be edited to have more or less PoB as necessary.
Note:
  • Selected crew members are only visible to the Boat Admins via the boat's profile.
  • Selected crew members are not alerted that they have been added to a race, nor will they see any reference to being added as crew for any race in their own account.
Remember, no matter what method of establishing a Crew List is used, it is the Skipper's responsibility to ensure it is correct for every race. Signing On and Off - as well as your accurate Crew List - are both mandatory requirements set out in the SI's and failure to complete all items will incur a Scoring Penalty.

...It's all about Safety.

Commodore's Message_Mornington Harbour Draft Local Port Area Plan

13/11/2023

Parks Victoria have released their draft concepts for the replacement of Fishermans Jetty and further development of the harbour for commercial and recreational users. Please refer to the attached link.    https://engage.vic.gov.au/mornington-harbour-local-port-area-plan-projectengage.vic.gov.au/mornington-harbour-local-port-area-plan-project

Our Future Directions Sub Committee comprising Greg Martin, Trevor Neate, John Underwood and myself have been consulted with the development of this document.

This committee will be meeting with Parks on Monday the 20th of November to receive further briefings on the development of this plan to this stage.

On Wednesday the 22nd of November at 7:00pm we will hold a meeting with interested Club members to provide feedback and begin gathering your views before we prepare a Club response to Parks by the 8th of December.

There is a long and at times painful history with proposals to make Mornington Harbour safer and to accommodate the wide spectrum of users and visitors of this precinct.

From the yacht club's perspective there are deficiencies in the concepts presented at this point which we will endeavour to address. Both Parks and the marine engineers engaged for this project have been constrained not only from accommodating the wishes of many different parties but also by their ministerial office given the state of Victoria's finances.

It is very important at this juncture that MYC present a united well thought out response which is cognisant of the wide harbour demands and needs and ensures the best outcome from funds provided by the State government at this point of time.

I look forward to briefing you further on Wednesday the 22nd of November, listening and gathering your views for our Future Directions Sub Committee to progress.
