Make your contribution today at morningtonpeninsula.fusion.org.au I am writing this note on Sunday 15th April and at Mornington we have, in the past week, experienced the last of summer temperatures, we’ve had a touch of autumn with falling leaves and lovely still days. Yesterday we had the wrath of winter, 50kt winds wreaked havoc with 3 yachts ripped from their moorings and blown onto the beach…. now that’s a first world problem. The new pier sustained more damage. People watched and marveled at the force of nature …. from the comfort of their warm cars …. a first world experience. There shall again be local press about the need for a safe harbour and there shall be the same conclusion. Too bad, so sad …. It’s only some rich guys yachts and they can afford it. These weren’t rich guys toys as we know them but we are each comparatively rich and blessed to live where we live in this part of the world. We can sometimes be short sighted, comfortable, complacent and even insensitive to others difficulties. We can be unappreciative of our own blessings, lifestyles, political and physical safety. We are constantly barraged by requests for monetary support for good causes, charities and crisis. This is another such request for support but it’s not a pressure. There is an old adage which says “joy is in the giving” and that’s certainly not my recollection of Christmas or Easter when I was a kid. “I just loved the receiving”. Now to the request…..Lisa has made a commitment to help the Fred Hollows Foundation continue to perform corrective eye surgery and restore sight in third world countries in which they operate. Its not just a third world problem but funding the Fred Hollows Foundation is a first world privilege. Cataract surgery is a miracle and a life changer for many with failing or no sight. Its not an overly complicated medical procedure. One of our close friends has just had it done and with private health cover, out of pocked costs were only $1500 for both eyes…..a first world cost. The Fred Hollows Foundation performs the surgery for $25 per eye and in Vietnam trains a doctor to perform the surgery for an investment of $5000. It’s our goal, with your help, to train a doctor or two and restore sight to as many as possible. On Friday 25th May, Lisa and three close friends are doing a 30km coastal trek to help raise awareness and money. She has done some training and at the end I know she is going to be a wreck, and I know she shall feel a great personal physical sense of satisfaction which I also hope shall be stronger that the pain of the blisters and sore joints. We have set an optimistic target and hope you can share our goal to train a doctor or two and to save as many eyes as possible. Thank you for considering our request and please click the link below if you can join us and help some sightless or visually impaired people to see. http://melbourne.coastrek.com.au/fundraisers/lisamarklew Yours sincerely Brian and Lisa Marklew. P.S. If you know somebody who might like to help please pass on our request. Did you know we have our very own FREE mobile App for iOS and Android just for our membership?
