Thanks for your support - This edition has "Our Bays Giants'!

29/6/2018

ASC Winter Regatta 2018

26/6/2018

Challenging light winds dominated over the weekend at the Albert Sailing Club’s Winter Regatta 2018.

Mornington was represented with Jay James, Heath Jones, Henri Levenspiel and Miles Levenspiel. Miles Levenspiel made his racing debut in Race 3 aboard Rainbow Warrior (finishing 15!) and highlighted what a great venue the Lake is over winter to get started in racing.

Well done to Jay placing 5 overall and a special mention for Heath Jones who put all his learning over the weekend into practice in the last race where he finished 13.

Dolphin Research Institute | Please support!

26/6/2018

Dear members,
Please support the Dolphin Research Institute & read on....there is also a donation box on the bar in the members lounge - THANK YOU!
Picture
Did you know that our bays are visited by the world's largest dolphins (killer whales), are home to the smallest seastar, have an annual mass migration of spider crabs, and is the only place in the world where common dolphins have left the open ocean to live in a bay like ours?

You can't look after our dolphins if we don't care for their environment. Which is why the Dolphin Research Institute runs marine education programs alongside research, to foster a community who cares enough about our bays to change how we live in the suburbs. This will become even more important in a future with extremes of climate and our population climbing from 5 to 10 million by 2060.

Our supporters directly aid research and education programs to protect our dolphins, whales and all our bays' living marine treasures.

How our supporters helped to rescue a baby dolphin... The mother dolphin was propping up her struggling baby, tangled in what looked like rope. The video tells the full story. Rescue of entangled baby dolphin in Port Phillip Bay.

For 27 years our supporters have provided the heart and soul of our organisation, giving us the foundation to create research, education and environmental leadership programs that have made an impact to protect our dolphins and bays. Many supporters have been with us for over 20 years.

Our supporters are the real heroes because without their support we would not have been able to respond.

We work in three key areas:
Scientific Research
For nearly three decades we have provided scientific evidence to help protect of our dolphins. We also help develop future scientists through internships and supporting post-graduate students.

Leadership
Has something gone missing from your street?
Chances are our 'i sea, i care' Ambassadors found it recently at the clean-out of a storm water pollution trap. Without these traps pollutants flow straight to the bay. Ambassadors help their communities to change how we live in our streets.
Support 'i sea, i care' HERE.

Marine Education
We engage over 10,000 children and adults each year, to foster caring and understanding for OUR marine treasures. Our 'i sea, i care' School Ambassador program has changed culture and developed 5,000 coastal leaders in over 100 schools.
Support education HERE.

MYC Foundation request June 2018

MORNINGTON YACHT CLUB FOUNDATION

Dear members,

The  Board of the Foundation is requesting members to consider making a donation to the Foundation to enable further projects to be undertaken for the benefit of the Club and its members. You will recall that the Foundation was established in June 2016 to provide much needed funding for three projects:
  • Development of facilities for the initial training of individuals and the development of sailing skills in their early years.  Our objective is to encourage junior sailors to join the Club and develop the skills to become active future members.
  • To provide financial assistance to elite sailors in the Club so that they can participate in regional, interstate, and international regattas and further develop their sailing careers.
  • To provide assistance to the Club's Sailability program enabling more disabled individuals to participate in sailing activities.
As a result of your contributions the Foundation has been able to:
  • Purchase for the Club 6 Pacer dinghies at a cost of $48,909.00, provide elite sailing grants to Club members totaling $6,000.00, and purchasing new sails for Sailability dinghies $1,244.00.
The Pacer dinghies will be used for both sail training, using world class instructors, and to participate in the schools team racing program.  Being competitive in this area, we will help attract the juniors we need to develop the club.

In recent seasons we have been fortunate in having outstanding youth sailors who have benefited from our junior training programs. Nick Sharman became our first Victorian Institute of Sport athlete and a winner of the Australian 420 Championships.  Currently we have the Richardson girls, also VIS scholarship holders, winning the Under 17 girls Australian Championships over the summer, and now on an overseas campaign which includes representing Australia in the Youth and Open World 420 Championships.   We provided them with financial assistance last year and are helping them currently with their international campaign.  I am sure we all wish them the best of luck in these events.

To continue these activities we need your continued support to fund these and other programs so desperately needed by our great Club. If you would like us to consider a specific project of your choosing please let us know. Please make a donation at a level you are comfortable with.

Donations can be made in the following ways:
  • By visiting the Australian Sports Foundation website, locating the Mornington Yacht Club projects, and donating on line.  Donations made in this way will be tax deductable to the donor.
  • By completing the donation form attached to this letter and forwarding it to the Club, who will then forward it to the Australian Sports Foundation.
  • By making a donation through the Club office.
Receipts will be issued for all donations.

The Board of the Foundation look forward to the contribution that we can all make through the Foundation to provide tangible assistance to the Club.

Yours truly,
Stuart.F.Gooley
Chairman

Training and Development officer position made redundant

8/6/2018

Picture
After a very thorough review of our operations and in line with our members’ expectations and our financial responsibilities we have made the decision to make the paid Training and Development position on staff redundant.
When a decision like this is made it obviously has an effect on a staff member and Donna Lloyd who has worked tirelessly to manage and grow this part of the club has been impacted and is no longer on staff at the club.
The decision was made after very careful deliberation based upon our financial resources. The decision was not made based upon the performance of Donna in any way.
Donna was professional throughout her tenure at the club and we wish her and her family all the very best for the future.
