Picture
It seems appropriate that in our 70th year, The Mornington Yacht Club entered in to an Agreement with the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) on 22 September 2015, whereby the Club has become an approved organization that can receive financial assistance from the ASF, in accordance with the provisions of the Agreement.

The ASF was established by the Australian Government to assist organisations such as ours raise funds for sport by offering the incentive of tax deductability for donations.  By establishing Projects that are approved by the ASF, the Foundation is eligible to receive grants, that the Club can then use for the agreed projects. The Foundation is not aimed at replacing any existing programs within the Club or the various programs offered by Yachting Victoria or others.

The newly formed Mornington Yacht Club Foundation is intended to:
- develop facilities for the initial training of individuals to learn sailing skills.  This will include the purchase and maintenance of suitable sailing craft and the funding of sailing instruction at the Club.
- to help more experienced sailors fulfil their ambitions and potential at a higher level of competition.  This will involve dedicated and specific coaching, and the preparation for, and travel to and participation in regional, interstate, and international competition.
- to provide funding to assist disabled individuals participate in sailing as a recreation and sport.

THE FOUNDATION
The Mornington Yacht Club Foundation is not a separate legal entity but a fund established by the Club.  The Foundation will have its own bank account and will be managed as a separate fund .  Any donations received will be deposited in the Foundation’s bank account and will be spent only in accordance with the purposes of the Foundation.  They will not be mixed with the funds of the Mornington Yacht Club.
The Foundation will produce financial statements annually at 31 March which will be made available to all donors and to all members of the Club.  The Foundation’s financial statements will be subject to audit review by the Club auditor.
The affairs of the Foundation will be the responsibility of a Board comprising:
- a Chairman, Stuart Gooley,
- the Commodore of the Club or his/her nominee,
-the Chairman of the Sailing Committee of his/her nominee,
- Noel Heyes and Ray Harvey

Inaugural Commodores Challenge @ SYC

23/5/2016

The Inaugural Commode's Challenge was held at SYC on the weekend  in what started out as a lovely 10 knot northerly which quickly turned into winds reaching up to 35 knots and consequently resulting in racing being abandoned. One race was completed before the second race was abandoned when the breeze picked up with SYC coming away with the only race win convincingly beating the other teams competing from Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, Mornington Yacht Club, Royal Brighton Yacht Club and Royal Geelong Yacht Club. Unfortunately due to the racing being cut short, there were insufficient races completed to constitute the series, which will see all teams coming back on July 31 for take two of the Inaugural Commodore's Challenge! Thanks to SYC Commodore, Kate Mitchell, SYC WISC representative, Megan Aulich and our Race Officer, Steve Aulich for all of their effort in organising the Commodore's Challenge! We would like to thank Matt Roberts Cilfton from EP Photography, for coming and taking all these photos.
Well done to our MYC girls!!!

Update 5 -  Mooring Working Group

20/5/2016

Following a meeting of mooring permit holders held on 6th April, the MYC General Committee established a sub working group to look at the moorings and harbour issues

The Mooring Working Group comprising of Tim Melville, Trevor Neale, Graeme Taylor and myself have commenced meeting on a regular basis to assist the MYC Committee with their interaction with all stakeholders (members, non-members, Parks Victoria (PV), general public, etc.).  The role of this group will be to report to the General Committee.  It is early days and much information has been provided over recent months; thanks to many.

To provide you with preliminary commentary, I report the following as key areas under discussion.
  • Opportunities to grow sailing and membership  through improved mooring occupancy
  • Improvement and simplification of mooring permit transfers ensuring permit holders are compliant
  •  General management of moorings and recommendations of   Parks Victoria
  • Review of Mooring Tackle Specifications
  • Review of actual tackle positions and complexities of varying boat sizes between positions.
  • Opportunities to improve the ‘yield of safe moorings’ through development of a master plan, with a range options
The Committee recognises the myriad issues which will take time to be researched.

The Working Group members are welcoming of any suggestions and thank those that already have.

One Sailing set to Commence - a message from the YV President

18/5/2016

Picture
On behalf of the Yachting Victoria Board I’m pleased to now advise all Commodores, club members, class associations and other stakeholders that the full transition to One Sailing is about to take place.

This important step has been formalised by the recent signing of the One Sailing Implementation Agreement. This is a comprehensive agreement between Yachting Victoria and Yachting Australia and is the culmination of an extended period of consultation, discussion and negotiation. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in this thorough and exhaustive process. This includes the Yachting Victoria and Yachting Australia boards, the staff of both bodies, the other MYA Presidents, and the many club commodores and officials who have provided input. I would like to thank our member clubs in general for their support as this process was undertaken.

The Implementation Agreement outlines the terms by which we will all go forward. In summary, one national management model will be adopted to provide services and support to the sailing community and to work collectively to advance sailing. Included in the Implementation Agreement are the resource levels that will be provided and the services that will be delivered. You may recall that during the process, reference was made to certain ‘safeguards’ being in place in order for Victoria to proceed. I’m pleased to advise that the Implementation Agreement, through its Service Schedule component, does cover all of the safeguards.

In terms of change, in Victoria the two main impacted areas will be the Board and the Staff.

Board
The Board will continue to play an important role in the overall governance of the sport and in terms of monitoring and reviewing the performance of One Sailing. Yachting Victoria will continue as a legal entity, will have a reduced chart of accounts, will hold insurance, and the Board, amongst its responsibilities, will be impacting the make-up of the national (YA) Board. The Board will meet regularly and take reports and updates from One Sailing staff and will annually contribute to the national strategic planning and budgeting. The member clubs will remain members of Yachting Victoria, as will the Honorary Life Members.

Staff
All One Sailing staff will become employees of Yachting Australia. The majority of the current YV staff will be assigned to Victoria specific roles and in several cases to the same role as current. In the first instance I’d like to congratulate Gavin Wall who will head up the Club Services team in Victoria as Regional Manager. Gavin will oversee a team of Club Services Officers including Ian Wall (Mobile Boatshed Manager), Chelsey Taylor (Boatshed Manager) and Paul Tweddell (Discover Sailing). Additions to this team are currently being worked through, including a replacement for Sam Watson, who it was announced recently, has accepted a new role at Lacrosse Victoria and in doing so leaves the One Sailing transition. We wish Sam the best in his endeavours.

Each of Steve Walker (GM Commercial and Government), Lesley Fasala (Events Manager) and Kate Lathouras (Communications Coordinator – Events) take on new national roles with Victoria specific elements. They will be based in the One Sailing - Melbourne office, along with the others outlined above. Planning is also underway to include a Regional Talent Officer with some Victorian specific responsibilities.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the long-time YV Bookkeeper David Vickers who has decided not to take up a role with One Sailing, and rather to spend more time sailing, playing golf and holidaying. David has been a great servant for the sport and he will be missed however we do expect him to still be around for a few more transitional months before we will wish him well for what sounds a bit like retirement.

In summary the Board is confident that with the above Melbourne based staffing, as well as the additional support and resources coming from other locations, that the services and support to clubs, and the sport in general, will be elevated. We will be working hard with all parties to successfully bring in this change and to realise the benefits.

At this point in time all contact details of the office and staff remain the same and I encourage you to continue to liaise with the office, staff and Board as previously.

I look forward to seeing many of you at an upcoming ‘Roadshow’, Club Conference, general meeting, club activity or out sailing. I also look forward to seeing enhanced services and support to our clubs and to the success of One Sailing.

Ian Cunningham
President

Balloon goes astray over Mornington and the Bay

16/5/2016

A hot air balloon has landed safely on a Mt Martha beach after jettisoning passengers offshore in waiting craft.
The drama began in Brighton when an attempt to land failed.
The alarm was soon raised as the balloon blew across to the bayside suburb of Beaumaris and was then blown out to sea.
It soon headed southwards, and at least one helicopter, numerous vessels, and police and ambulance raced along its trajectory down the coast.
The pilot of the balloon, who onlookers at the crash site were hailing a hero, offloaded passengers into the relative safety of waiting watercraft (SSCBC and MSC members Nigel, Jane Romy and Jack Abbott) so as to avoid a possible heavy impact with the ground.
It is believed that nobody was injured in the crash.  Photos thanks to Bill McDonald

Zubbadoo and the Boat with no name - A book for Little Sailors

10/5/2016

Picture
This is a fantastic Children's story written by a very talented MYC Member Deb Butler.
I recommend all ages will enjoy reading.

Zubbadoo and the boat with no name -  A book for little sailors

Zubbadoo lived by the sea, her father was a sailor.
She watched him leave every day, launching from his trailer.
“Weigh anchor Zubs!” He’d shout to her as he sailed away.
“Aye Aye, Skipper!” she’d yell back “Have a windy day!”

It was Zubbadoo’s greatest wish to Captain her own boat.
She’d try to make one many times, but none of them did float.
Then one day, out of the blue, it rose up from the water.
A little boat beached on the sand, like it was mail order.

Painted like a coral reef with fish along the sides.
It looked a little worse for wear, had ridden many tides.
But it was hers. She didn’t care. She loved it just the same.
Everything was perfect except… it didn’t have a name.

“Oh dear”, she cried. “It cannot be. Whatever can I do?”
“A boat has only one true name, and it cannot have two.
” For she had heard the tales and knew it was bad luck.
Renaming a boat could make the ocean run amuck.

She knew what was required, only one thing left to do.
“We’ll find out where you came from and that will be our clue.”
She fastened up her safety vest, and tied on the burgee.
“Now we just need a Captain… Well… I guess that could be me.”

She opened up the sea charts, and listened to the wind.
Inspected all the clouds, to check if they’re rolling in.
She hoisted up the sails, and tied off to the boom.
And leaned over port side, to ensure she had the room.

Meanwhile, off the shore, a ray was coming in,
He’d been out in the bay, looking for his dins.
“Nauton!” she called to him. He was an old sea friend.
He lived at the yacht club, by the jetty’s end.

“Please won’t you join us, this boat has lost its name”
“And if we don’t help her find it, she’ll never be the same.”
Nauton was still chewing, on his final bite,
“Sounds like a great adventure, I won’t put up a fight.”

The sails filled with gusts of wind, high up in the sky.
As they shot out from the dock, faster than the eye.
As to which direction, they didn’t really know.
But luckily the unnamed boat remembered where to go.

Out they left from Schnapper Point, right across the bay.
Tacking and jibing, they trimmed the sails the whole way.
Sea gulls danced around the mast, chirping old sea songs.
“Hey-har, we’re going back, to where this boat belongs.”

They pulled up to a halt, “Quick drop the anchor.”
“Phew! That was close.” Big rocks had almost sank her.
Off they jumped from the deck, but something was amiss.
The ground felt kind of funny, they landed with a squish.

“Is anybody out there?” Zub yelled into the distance.
And a voice sounded back, “I’m in need of some assistance.”
They spun in a circle, but couldn’t find a trace.
“I’m over here! I’m stuck you see! In this peculiar place.”

Sure enough, a boy was there, bogged knee-deep in the mud.
They heaved and they hoed, and set him free with a thud.
“I’m so grateful that you found me, my boat and I got wrecked.”
She sailed off to find me help, and save me from neglect.

It was then that Zubba realised, the boat that she had found,
Belonged to someone else, and it was homeward bound.
“Never mind.” She reassured. “For that is not a worry.”
I was Captain of a voyage and for that I can’t feel sorry.

“May I introduce myself, my name is Captain Jerry.”
“My boat and I together, we’re the Mud Islands ferry.”
But Zubbadoo had something else weighing on her mind,
“I still don’t know her name. Would you be so kind?”

Certainly. For saving me, that hardly seems enough.
appointed her myself, she’s called Tiny but Tough.
“Indeed she is”, they laughed and laughed and all sailed off together.
For the best kind of friends, are still friends through stormy weather

THE GLOSSARY Things to know before you’re on the open sea!
You can practice these terms by using your bed as a sailing boat.

Anchor – An anchor is used to stop the boat from moving when you want it to stay put. It is a heavy object attached to a long chain that is dropped into the water and sits on the sea bottom.
Aye Aye – This means ‘yes’ or ‘I understand’. You can say this when the Captain gives you an order. Boom – A big, thick bar that helps the sails change direction. It moves across the boat quite low so WATCH YOUR HEAD!
Burgee – A flag that shows you belong to a particular Yacht Club. This is similar to you wearing a football scarf to support your team.
Deck – The floor of the boat. What you stand on.
Dock - An enclosed area of water where boats go to have their tea break, get repaired and pick up or drop off supplies or cargo.
Safety vest – This is very important and you can’t sail without it. This helps you float if you fall into the water. It is usually a bright colour so that you can be seen by rescuers.
Sea charts – These are like road maps for the water, they help you work out where you are going otherwise called ‘navigating’.
Skipper – The Captain of the boat can also be called a Skipper.
Sails – The big sheets of fabric that catch the wind. These are where all the power for the boat comes from.
Weigh anchor – This means lift the anchor off the bottom of the ocean so you can get sailing again. Don’t forget to do this or you won’t go very fast.
Port side - When facing the bow (the front of a ship), port side means the left side of the boat. Starboard means the right side of the boat.
Tacking – This means to change course by turning a boat into the wind.
Jibing - This means to change course by turning a boat into the wind.
Trimming – This means adjusting the tension in the sails so that they can
Mast - A tall upright post that stands in the middle of the boat and holds the sails. It’s the tallest part on a boat. It’s like a bit like flagpole.
