Marion and Stuart Gooley are on a seven week road trip up to the Gulf of Carpentaria by way of Marree, the Oodnadatta track, Uluru, Kings Canyon, Alice Springs, then to Tennant Creek Cammoweal, and Bordertown on the gulf.
Here us a little bit of what they have been up to by Stuart.....
"At Marree I called in at the Eyres Lake Yacht Club which must be one of the remotest clubs in Australia. Until 2011 they sailed on Lake Eyre when water permitted mainly small catamarans from what I could see. In 2011 the SA Government in conjunction with the local Aboriginal Corporation closed down the Lake for sailing. Since then the Club has had to sail on the Goyder Lagoon which is some 200 kms north of Marree on the Birdsville track not making it easy for a casual sail. The Goyder Lagoon is fed by the mighty Diamontina River and is located on the Clifton station for those who are familiar with the Birdsville track. The Club held its last Regatta in 2019.
William Creek has flags and would you believe one of the flags is an MYC Flag Officers burgee; who would have left his there is a mystery!!
Not sure how many other Yacht Clubs we will visit on our trip except for the Port Douglas Yacht Club which we have visited before and is great fun".
Regards, Stuart
