As the sailing season approaches, it is worth checking that your boat insurance still reflects how your vessel is being used.
A policy arranged several years ago may no longer match the boat, its value or the activities it is involved in.
Changes that may need to be disclosed to an insurer include:
- Participating in races or regattas
- Moving to a different marina, mooring or storage location
- Installing new navigation equipment
- Replacing or upgrading the motor
- Adding sails, tenders or other equipment
- Changing the people who regularly operate the boat
- Travelling outside the policy’s usual cruising area
It is also important to understand how the policy responds while the boat is racing. Some policies include racing automatically, while others may apply restrictions, additional excesses or separate conditions.
A broker can review the current policy, identify possible gaps and compare other suitable options where appropriate. This does not necessarily mean changing insurers. In some cases, the existing arrangement may remain suitable once the details have been reviewed and updated.
A short conversation before the season begins can help avoid uncertainty at claim time. MYC members are welcome to contact Sage for a complimentary boat insurance review.
