Saturday Race Report 29 February.
Those of us that sailed last week at the Sail Peninsula Regatta at Safety Beach have had a busy few weeks. Those of us that chose to stay home have had a nice week off. In Lisa and my case, it gave us time to suppress the memory of a heelish sail back from Queenscliff. So, it was nice to get back into a slightly normal routine of a Saturday afternoon sail this weekend.
Saturdays racing saw the MYC fleet meet our colleagues from SBSC and MCYS in the center course for a combined race. A lower number of SBSC and MCYS boats turned out, maybe due to a big weekend of racing last week. A combined fleet of 17 boats turned up to race in unusual conditions for this year – light winds and sunny skies ! The wind was a little too light at the start with slow progress to the top mark in tricky and shifty conditions. It was not unusual for boats to pick up several places in one tack, only to lose several places at the next crossing. As we headed to the top mark there seemed to be a number of boats parked trying to round. Thankfully the frustrating conditions gave way to a very pleasant 10 knots of wind for the remainder of the race.
Highlight for the day was Paul Dynes solo effort on Himalayen Women, complete with the vocal stylings of the best of Crowded House. No one is really sure how he was able to get to the esky for a beer during the race sailing alone.
The days racing was made extra special after the finish, with a spinnaker run all the way back to MYC. A great way to round off perhaps the best conditions for the year. Congratulations to the Rear Commodore for finally organizing decent weather.
