ORCV’s very popular annual Port Phillip Heads Rip Tour will be held on Sunday 22 March 2026, departing Queenscliff at 12 noon. You can read a book, look at diagrams and marine charts, but seeing it from the water with expert guidance is a different experience.
'I highly recommend this tour to anyone who goes even close to Port Phillip Heads and especially to anyone who wants to venture into Bass Strait and return safely.' —Tony Christmas, Commodore Vic Australian Volunteer Coast Guard
During the tour, a highly experienced navigator provides expert commentary on navigating this gateway, where underwater reefs limit the navigable entrance to just 0.6 nautical miles. The ‘pincers’ of the two peninsulas are known collectively as The Heads and comprise Point Lonsdale in the West and Point Nepean in the East. The Rip is the passage of water between these two points.
