Mark your calendars! We're looking forward to meeting you at our welcome evening on Friday, January 24th. Invitations will arrive in the new year! Our all new Weather Station and High Definition streaming HarbourCam are now live and both systems run 24/7.
The systems reside at the original WeatherCam address : https://www.morningtonyc.com.au/weathercam/ We'll continue to do more site enhancement and deeper integration between the two systems over the next little while. Fresh off the Cabbage Tree Race with a hard-earned 1st on PHS Double Handed and a close 2nd on IRC, MYC Member Grant Chipperfield, co skipper of the J133 Joker X2, reflects on the lessons learned and the road ahead to the 5500nm Osaka race.
“It was a hard and frustrating race, but a great learning step,” he begins, recounting the highs and lows...CLICK here to read on A massive congratulations to Sophie Jackson and crew Jamie Randall on their 1st place at Sail Sydney in the 470. It is clear that the racing on Thursday nights has become closer as the SailSys handicap system has evolved. This has led to greater intensity at the finish. There have been a number of rule breaches in recent weeks that are not only a display of poor sportsmanship but could be quite dangerous. We have a mixed fleet of sailors with varying degrees of skill, so it is very important that all boats keep a proper lookout for other competitors.
Regards, Race Committee Stuart Hutchison and Tim Donnellan are racing in the Sydney to Hobart. Both are members of Mornington Yacht Club. Stuart has sailed on Antipodes for the past 9 years and Tim for 5, they have a crew of 18 and are very pleased to be selected again for this year's Hobart. They have trained and done many lead up races for the selection - Tim is helm and trim & Stuart is foredeck. Antipodes is a Hong Kong based yacht now sailing in Australia for the last 2 years. She normally races in Asia and does very well for an older boat, weighing 15 tonne and is 72 foot long. Stuart and Tim are a great team and will hopefully do well this year - they have asked for as many of you to follow & cheer them on! Tim and Stuart are both there for the same reason; to race hard and enjoy the sea. They would like to thank Mornington Yacht Club for supporting all types of yacht racing. This is the third time Antipodes will compete in the 2024 Rolex Sydney to Hobart, following its debut in 2022. Compared to current 72-footers, Antipodes is significantly heavier, having been designed in the 90s as an offshore racer-cruiser. Since rebuilding the boat in 2019, we have sailed over 250,000 miles, competing in iconic races such as Antigua Race Week and the Rolex China Sea Regatta. We campaigned Antipodes in Asia from 2012 to 2020, as well as in Northern Australia, where we hold the race records for both the Darwin to Ambon and Darwin to Dili races. More recently, we competed in the inaugural Sydney to Auckland race, taking line honours and setting the race record.. We really enjoy racing out of the CYCA and find it much more competitive than in Asia. Our success is almost solely due to our crew of ‘Antipodeans,’ who have built a strong bond. Our long-standing crew includes Alan Tillyer, Angel Balladares II, Roger Segovia, and Cornelios Olis from the Philippines, who have been with the boat for over ten years. This year, we competed in the Sydney to Gold Coast Race, Gold Coast to Mackay Race, and Airlie Beach Race Week Regatta before returning to Sydney for the iconic Blue Water Series. Geoff Hill was recently awarded the 2023 Australian Ocean Racing Championship for the most miles sailed in 2023.
