RMIT Architectural Students have undertaken a real live project in association with the Mornington Sea Scouts in designing a new community facility that will accommodate the growing demand of Junior and Youth seaside activities . MYC is involved as it includes new storage to replace the Opti Tin Sheds. The Student Architects have been creative within the brief given and come up with some brilliant ideas and concepts that are worth serious consideration. Including a scenic vantage point at the end of the Main Street looking north to the city skyline and a tower symbolizing a yacht mast that can be seen along Main Street and a lift for all inclusive access to the facility and beach. The concepts have been presented to the Council and whilst it is only early stages the facilities on scout Beach are looking a whole lot better than the current tin sheds and scout hall that badly needs updating for Mornington's younger-set. The Rear Commodore Jacko was in high Bundy Spirits tonight to see 33 boats competing in ideal 15-20 knot South to South Easterly conditions. We had new Day Pass members return after Discover Sailing day on Sunday and thank you Sandara, First Light, Phoenix and Javelin for taking extra crew. The new Mark Hodgson, Beneteau 48 :Something Blue" arrived for its first race and was immediately surrounded by the Tackers 3 Optis and they were so in awe with its beauty 2 of the 3 capsized. Eicks was expecting GT to make a special appearance having only recently returned from a 3rd at the Worlds on "Scratch" but understandably was a late withdrawal. Course 2R was set by RO Steve giving the longest downwind leg possible and I expect frustrating all those wanting to surf the waves with Spinnakers in near perfect conditions. By the final leg the wind was shifting to the East and made it primarily a long Port windward beat . Congratulations to the Trailable and 2 x sports boats for finishing on the podium tonight. 1st Messin About - Paul Copeland 1 hr 18min 15 sec 2nd Kiss - Greg Scherwinski 1hr 19min 11 sec 3rd Untouchable - Bill Colman 1hr 19min 48 sec 4th and First Couta - Lincoln Rose - Peter Sydes 5th and First Keel Boat - Silcon Chip - Laurence White The Rocks Closest to the Pin Award - Foam Fast Paul Heyes "Zero" Seconds Full Results Click here Leading the series after 3 races 1st Untouchable - Bill Colman 2nd First Light - Andrew Weber 3rd Cocktail - Rob Rainsford 47 Total entries thus far. Also out there was the Solo Feva man David Griersmith back again sail training in the harbour which was fabulous to see , the Etchell "Cleanskin" with Cat sailor Phil Johnson at the helm and the 420 flying with Sophie , Ella , Jack and Bunny chasing in the coach boat. Thank you Good Guys! Thank You Volunteers! Excuse the many photos of Jacko and Schwarzy and of Etchells but that was all that was possible on the water today.
WInd was S- SW all afternoon and slowly building to up to 20 knots. Racing was short and kept the crews busy . Etchells Fleet - 3 Races , 6 boats Fringe Benefit, Cam MacKenzie and Paul Heyes took the juniors sailing and were highly competitive. They tore a kite on the second leg and by the final leg they were still in second place with a spare kite. I am unsure as to why there is not results for Fringe Benefit ? Well done Quantum Leap, Jacko Commodore for winning Two races and the other Race to Dark Joker, Grant Chipperfield. Flying Fifteen Fleet - 2 races , 4 boats Under the Pump, Joe Etherson, and Ffat Chance, John Best and Ian Robertson won a race each and this should make for an exciting championship series. Thank You Tower and on shore team, Steve Bardsley, Sue Redman, John Randle & guest Shona Watson! As part of our 70th Birthday celebrations we are contacting long standing members to assist and provide contact details of old friends who are no longer members of the club. We are endeavouring to get in contact with as many past members as possible with the aim is to send a personalised invitation to these colleagues to the Back To Mornington YC weekend 20-21st February 2016. Of course you will be invited also. Please contact Sarah or Rod with any information on 59757001 or office@morningtonyc.net.au Mercedes III led the Australian team to victory in the 1967 Admiral’s Cup, with a top points performance. She more than fulfilled the expectations of designers Ted Kaufman and Ben Lexcen. Now MYC Members and champion yachties Scott White (2007 club person of the year) and Mick Daddo have kept the boat to still perform above expectations with owner Martin Ryan sailing Mercedes III to many more victories. Only last month Mercedes III won the Guineas against a strong Couta Boat team which included Lincoln Rose - Peter Sydes And last weekend they were the winner of the CYANZ Tony Blake Perpetual Trophy .. This trophy is a print of the Tony Blake donated $35,000 oil painting of the Classics Sayonara and Rawhiti racing in a Sayonara Cup Challenge through Half Moon Bay. There other various awards include winning Cock of the Bay on many occasions. The new rating systems AMS and IRC, were introduced well after Mercedes III was designed and therefore giving a distinct advantage to modern yachts designed to these systems. Someone forgot to tell Mercedes III. Whilst 2014 is the 25th anniversary of her first 1989 win, it’s also the 10th anniversary of her win on AMS in 2004 and 2008 (by 7 seconds) and follows 1st, 1st and 2nd placings on IRC Division 2 over the last 3 years. “Our racing calendar is concentrated on Classic yacht racing around Williamstown, Hobsons Bay and St Kilda with 25 other Classic yachts. Once or twice a year we take on the modern boats. We are hoping for typical Cock of the Bay conditions - 25 knots plus from the south. She is a beautifully balanced yacht that thrives in the Port Phillip chop” says owner of 27 years Martin Ryan. Congratulations to the MYC Team who were the victors of the Victory Cup (Our fourth win 2003,2004,2007,2015). Our top 6 cards gave us a 2 stroke win over RBYC with RMYS third and winner of the last 7 events SYC last. Also congrats to Gary Gosling Ist Individual Male with 40 pts and Trevor 3rd overall male with 38 pts. For more details come to the MYC deck for Happy Hour and ask for Trevor Congratulations to Graeme Taylor and crew Grant Simmer and Steve Jarvin for his 3rd Podium finish in world class competition. at the 2015 World Etchells.Championships in Hong Kong. 2 USA Boats finished first and second and the next Australian boat skippered by Mathew Chew was 7th. Excerpt from 2015 Etchells World Championships - Final Race Report Going into the final day of the Etchells World Championships, which have been taking place for the past week out of The Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club Marina, USA entry Aretas held a five point lead over compatriot Scimitar, with a gaggle of boats in prime position to step up on the podium in third place. The Race management team was on the course an hour earlier than usual, with PRO Kevin Wilson finding 8 to 10kts ENE and “no sheep in the paddock” on perhaps the flattest race course to date. Happy to finish on the podium, Graeme Taylor of Magpie reflected “Obviously it was a long week, there’s been some great racing we’ve had an absolute ball and it was really tight going in for third position today, six points behind Marvin (Beckmann) and two points to the boats between. We were actually eighth this morning. The winners were in a league of their own all week, but we improved gradually through the week.” All that remains is the presentation party – at which all the competitors have earned the right to let their hair down – and a special mention for the 120+ volunteers from Hong Kong and overseas, both on shore and on the water, who have given up the best part of a fortnight to help make the 47th Etchells World Championships a resounding success. Question Time It was 7/11 day and many skippers I suspect stopped for their free medium slurpee energy boost at 7/11 before a day of sailing in a consistent 200 degree Southerly of 18-20 knts. The Great Southern course was set north (well north) of the Mussel farm at windward and leeward distances of 1.5 nm and 1.2 nm. It was great to see Retriever back in the water with two new Mercury engines, battery configuration and hydraulic steering thanks to Wes Frost Marine. Retriever is now the best it has ever been!. 4 x Div 1 Boats, 8 x Div 2 boats and 7 x Div 3 boats arrived at the start line to compete and a separate start was set for each division. Racing was initially postponed from 11am to 2pm and then another 10 minutes as a stray No.3 leeward buoy drifted onto the start line. Lazy and Brendan on Sara had a really busy day (Lazy and Busyin the one sentence is a bit ironic) with re-positioning the No. 3 mark on 2 occasions and rescuing a Feva inshore. They did a great job. The volunteers on the water John (RO), Julia , Tania, Lazy and Brendan plus the on shore team of Brodie the best radio broadcaster I have ever heard, Steve and his team of course made the day great for everyone.
The number 3 mark had a hectic day when a Div 1 boat that must have been getting dizzy with so many laps hit and dragged the mark back to the finish line. The dolphins were the fastest leading all the boats and there were some boats being led faster than others out there and congratulate the Line Honour winners finishing around the 2 hours - 2 hours 30 min mark were Div.1 Anna , Div, 2 Arabelle and Div. 3 The Darskide. Messin About (if they hadn’t messed about for the two minutes), would have finished before the sun set and the race was abandoned. - but wasn’t it a beautiful evening!
Saturday was a different story....up to 25K winds and 20 odd boats had an envigorating sail, despite the warning of possible tornados. I was nice to see Seduction out racing and congratulations to Dark Side of the Moon who nearly beat the Division 1 and 2 yachts! Arabelle reported that everything clicked into place for them and it was just a perfect race. Well done to the winners – Div 1 Windsong, Div 2 Arabelle and Div 3 Dark Side of the Moon in both races. A gentle breeze building slowly on Sunday saw 8 boats take advantage of our slice of paradise in the SSS. We were entertained around the course by multitudes of playful dolphins. Magic! The Doctor blitzed the field, even though they headed for Melbourne on the second leg. 2nd was Beau Brummell and 3rd Mixed Nuts. Well done everyone and thanks to the tower and volunteers, Jane & Tonia Tornado warnings did not stop 26 boats race tonight and tackers 3 group train. All day it rained and at one stage Bolts was quoted to say Whilst we are in Sunshine Armageddon is about to unleash in Carrum. Fortunately this did not happen. Instead we had amazing cloud action and a very clear view of the Melbourne skyline. All on the deck and the public were impressed with the Couta Boat C1992 Camilla Rose rigging for the first time this season and the incredible paintwork.transformation. The flying fifteen crew of John and Ian watched from the deck and critiqued the Flying fifteen start. They were impressed as Garry Wood appeared to start 7 minutes too early. It was a long downwind start and I betThe Buccaneer wished they had their spinnaker up. The Tornado turned to a drifter but who cares if no one finished and race abandoned. as it was all worth a beer at the end. For the non results click here. Steve Bardsley has plenty of bottles of wine to drink tonight. All fleets were in action including the mother of the Fleet - The Enterprize! We had Michelle Pickford keeping us all happy , Vice Commodore Sheryl Schumacher keeping us well fed (over 120 sausages sold) and hydrated and the Mornington Dolphins keeping all those on the water entertained. Michelle not only organised the dolphins, Enterprize and sunshine but she also organised a Blimp Fly over! It was a real family and fun atmosphere with hundreds discovering sailing for the first time. I am sure there will be plenty of Tackers at Mornington this Summer and new crew for our twilight races. Also a Huge Thank You to: Registration: Linda Ricks and Tanya Lauton The Walkers Melita Miles, Sausage Sizzle: David Griersmith and Anne Sailability was ledt by Graeme Lyall and his reliable and competent team Junior Optis - Stan Austin and Alex Ferguson 420 - Charlie Purcell, Flying Fifteen - Gary Wood, Roger McGaw Rescue Duty- Di and Russ Kemp Keellboats - Windsong - Jim Watson and crew Hasta La Vista - David Phillips, Peter Voigt and Whiskers - Terry Jones.Paul Dynes, First Light - Andrew Weber, Steve Bolton, Shaun Miles And THANK YOU SO MUCH also to all those I forgot to mention. What a great place Schnapper Point, Mornington Harbour is for boating. THE Hon MP Bruce Bilson and Mayor Cr Bev Colomb officially opened the avenue of honour rotunda in Mornington. It was the last official duty as Mayor for Cr Bev Colomb.
Heritage Support Committee chair of Mornington RSL Colin Fisher was MC and provided a wonderful dedication ceremony of the avenue. Bronze plaques giving information about avenues of honour, and particularly Mornington and district’s, were installed and the Schools of the area were all represented and marched the Avenue of Honour in respect . A picture below shows Peninsula School Prefect and MYC Member Kristian Tipovsky on duty. “This project has been driven by Mornington RSL as a joint RSL, Mornington Peninsula Shire and Rotary project,” Mr Fisher said. “It was financed by contributions from the Briars Ward councillors’ discretionary spending allowances, Rotary, and from money raised by the RSL from the local community. “Donations were received in return for having engraved pavers laid in an area adjacent to the rotunda. Initial works preparing a concrete base for the pavers began on Monday.” Mornington Yacht Club and more than 80 Mornington Peninsula companies and organisations contributed to the project, as well as 28 individuals and families. Their logos and names are displayed as another feature of the park. This email supersedes the previous newsletter sent today. The start time is now 2pm ( NOT 11am) I have spent considerable time today talking to the various classes and divisions and MYC is not aware of any SBSC boats participating. SO rather than having an unhappy membership the race has been postponed for 3 hours and the course may drift back closer to MYC. Please let your crew know. Jacko , Rear Commodore |
