Victorian Boat Licensing Course to be held at MYC 12th or 19th of February 2016 at 6.00pm Open to age 12+ Contact Michelle Pickford with preferred date Saturday saw a great fleet head off to Williamstown for our long distance 'Destination Williamstown' event. The day got going with precious little breeze and it was a good couple of hours before the fleet started to get out of sight of the Club!
Upon arrival in Williamstown, crews were treated to great hospitality up at the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club. Most boats stayed overnight and returned home on Sunday in a light Northerly. Thanks to our welcoming hosts, Hobsons Bay Yacht Club! While the Div1, 2 and 3 boats were away, the Etchells and Fifteens were out to play. These fleets raced three heats of their Club Champs and had fantastic conditions - which did get a little tricky near the end of the day and kept the race crew on their toes! Here's some pics of Saturday's activity around MYC and HBYC. Thanks to Bolts, Maj, Kelly and John Underwood. Our kids had a huge week in last weeks Optimist Nationals sailed on Botany Bay. During the first few days, the weather was atrocious. Our young sailors experienced Opti sailing in gusts over 25 knots and in over 100 mm of rain. Visibility was poor, so much so, a support boat turned on its more powerful lights to show the position of the finish line. The kids got much better avoiding spectacular nose dives and capsizing on the run. Sailing at the end of Kingsford Smith runway also gets interesting. On the last day 3 optimists were laid flat as a 747 flew low overhead. Needless to say the whole week was a big challenge for our relatively young group. They have certainly learnt heaps, and return much more experienced. 15 optimists sailed in the three fleets, with most in open fleet. The qualifying series was sailed in heavy wet conditions, and then the final series was in lighter conditions. So the lighter kids who had a tough few days came back stronger at the end. Matilda Richardson and Jazzy Evenden made it into gold fleet. Lily Richardson had a tough qualifying series, but bounced back to get six in silver and John Faulkner sailed to a good ninth. MYC did get on the podium in Intermediate and Green Fleets. Millie Evenden won green, winning the same trophy as Tyrone Gowans did in 2009. New member Jeremy Gray won 3rd in Intermediate Open Fleet - 124 competitors
Intermediate Fleet - 83 Competitors
Green Fleet - 46 Competitors

Click here to go to today's Photo Gallery Have you ever looked enviously at the NYE celebrations on Sydney harbour and wished you could be there? Well an intrepid group of MYC trailables decided that it might just be possible.
After confirmation from CYCA that there was room to berth Mixed Nuts (Tim and Lisa O'Grady), Messin About (Paul and Noleen Copeland) and Jenda (Graham and Tonia Vertigan) we decided to head north after Christmas to spend a week on Sydney Harbour. After a two day trip by road we rendezvoused at Rose Bay to launch and sailed to Rushcutters Bay where the CYCA made us welcome for the next week. Whilst the NYE fireworks were a highlight, Sydney Harbour as a cruising destination has a lot to offer including the excitement of sailing on one of the busiest water ways in the world, right in the middle of one of the most spectacular cities on earth, whilst at the same time being able to find isolated anchorages that seem miles from anywhere. All three boats even took the opportunity to head out to the heads and offshore during our stay. by Lisa O'Grady Big thumbs up to Matthew Hazelwinkel and Tim Crowe from the Etchells 'Pale and Stout' who didn't sail on Saturday 2nd Jan, but instead pitched in and became part of the short-handed On-Water race crew - and did the course laying/rescue duty for the day. Thank you gentlemen; the day would not have gone ahead without you. And this is an opportune time to again thank volunteer John Mills and his team on Retriever for their continued hard work being on the water so often for us. Did you know that you have a responsibility to perform race duty as per the roster that has been published on our website (under Sailing) since the start of the season. Please take the time to look through it and ensure you diarise when your commitment is. If you find yourself scheduled on and you have an issue, please contact the office immediately. It is up to all of us to do our share with duty so that we can all go racing. MYC has a great fleet of juniors racing in the Nationals at Georges River 16ft Sailing Club Botany Bay, New South Wales. They have encountered just about everything - and have found themselves bailing out their boats from the rain just a bout as much as they have from the waves! Follow our junior team that are competing in Green, Intermediate and Open fleets here PS: Sorry about the blank article yesterday - as they say in the technology world, 'ya get that sometimes' MYC With a number for club changes occurring this year the office will now be taking a more active role in the operational management of the yard. MYC Member Pete de Lange has now departed the shed and sub contractor Richard McDonald of Mornington Marine has been permitted to use the shed. Pete's expertise as a shipwright will still be valued and is always welcome to continue his good work. The association with Richard has to be mutually beneficial for it to proceed and I do hope he does obtain the support of the members. His phone number is 0431 110 933. I have given permission for Richard to clean up and move boats within the yard if required to improve efficiency, Richard's experience within the boating industry is amazing and I hope you all have a chance to catch up and welcome him soon. Slipping - Keith will mentor Richard in this role and the aim is to increase the utilization of the he slipway now that the upgrade is close to completion. MYC Member Wayne Larder, a professional in risk management is assisting Richard and I with identifying OH&S risks in the yard. All issues will be addressed over Winter and yard rules to be updated. I expect the new rules will commence in the next few months and prominently on display in the yard MYC Member Cam Mackenzie has generously provided new software to control all our Club maintenance issues and this will allow the club to administer maintenance in a far more professional manner. Finally the huge respect that Keith Ross has at the club I would hope he continues to be the nominated committee representative overseeing the yard and again sincerely do hope the Thursday Action Group (TAG) continue doing their fantastic work maintaining the grounds, buildings and yard as usual.
